re: Why is it so important to rich people that they signal their wealth to other people?

Walmart clothes? An Accord? No thanks.

To be fair, many of his examples (groceries, education, etc.) were areas where even wealthy people tend to prioritize high quality and honestly, they should!

Exactly. And usually their metric where the line is drawn is “right past what I can afford”.
Remember “NO MORE MILLIONAIRES!” quietly became “NO MORE BILLIONAIRES!” ?
It’s the same people that bitch about weddings or engagement rings or any other thing that they coincidentally weren’t in a financial position to do. They assume all who participate in these things must be drowning in debt or were unable to buy a home or are unable to retire later.
And I’m sure some are. But it’s a dumb assumption. And a dumb thing to dictate is “wrong” just because you’re salty it’s not a smart financial move for yourself.
Also LOL at all the posts about “wealthy people drive old Accords and clip coupons”. Some do. Some don’t. Plenty of wealthy people that are plenty comfortable and will pass plenty of money down also drive nicer/new cars and have nice homes. People aren’t a monolith.

Liking nice things and people notice them? Nothing to say it’s just someone that likes and can afford nice things. Making sure everyone sees how expensive things are you can afford? Insecurity.

Exactly. Know a couple people that are beyond rich. They still play goat tracks and have a blast.

The obese circus clown in the WH has his name on the side of his plane. Bezos has nothing on his arrogance.

Fanciest thing I do is wear nice shirts and jeans. Wait until you split a cheap pair of Levis or your buttons fall off.
We don't do fancy vacations, cars, etc. We have 1 house. It's nice but not extravagant.

Jeff Bezos married an ugly wannabe model with fake tits who likes to spend all his money. I doubt he really made these decisions on his own. Screams trophy wife who wants to flaunt how she bagged a super-nerd who is a billionaire.

Because deep down... they are just a golf pro - Karen or young assistant Ken affair away from feeling above all in their deep hole of "look at me.'
In Bezos world, the vapid Oprah and Gayle King INVITES. Where did Stedman go, Oprahs fake work husband?
They do the best nose candy, champagne, and fish eggs. Their transfusions to feel 18 may interact with ozempic. When the fake boobs, hair extensions, fake big asses and botox wears off, they are even worse than they feel.
Watch Maureen Callahan on the nerve. The Joan Rivers of the times.

Define really wealthy. What's the low end net worth of really wealthy?
Generational wealth. Tons of liquidity. Not paper money (houses, cars, assets, valuations)
Where no one in the household goes to a job site, or logs in daily to perform work functions. Other people manage their businesses, and run their errands. They only take emergency calls, or they initiate calls because something doesnt look right on the financials
They spend their lives at that point trying to outdo others around them, because they are insecure. And forever bored. And often medicated. Money is now their weapon of choice

Insecurity is a human trait, not a rich one. This thread was started out of insecurity. Your harsh, broad characterization of wealthy people probably draws from yours.

I think texas people are worse... mcmansions, 100k vehicles, debt up to their eyeballs, all for show... they truly care about what other people think of them, and it's kind of pathetic if you ask me
I'm 39, I live comfortably in a 2500sqft house... I have an 8yr old ford truck and my ol lady drives a corolla (she loves her car)... we have 2 boats (17ft bay and 10ft john), no kids yet, and 1 dog... I can retire at 55 and she can retire at 50, yet we vacation 4 times/year... we don't social media, and we don't keep up with the jonses... cuz a lot of them will be working well past 55... we live modest, so our golden years can be as great as possible
My advice.... stay under the radar and when it matters, make the life as great as possible... currently saving to buy a camp on the water, and some land in west feliciana
Showing wealth is for losers who peacock and enjoy attention... I want to enjoy the ride of life, stay low key and have something to pass down
yall sit here and post shite like this and have no clue if people are in "debt up to their eyeballs" because you know know their financial situation but pretend to
then get on here and brag about saving so much...some would rather live for the now instead of saving everything they can on a maybe they can enjoy retirement.
or some can afford all the things you mentioned and still put up a lot for retirement.
the people on here that judge others are way way worse than those who supposedly "show off"
you dumb mother frickers judge people for the clothes they wear, the car they drive, the house they build etc etc etc
how about dont fricking worry about what others buy and stop comparing yourself to them? yall claim to ignore them then turn around and post
quote:

buying nice things isnt peacocking
how about you peacock on my balls and stfu?

Not all of them do. The richest man in my community wears ragged clothes, does all of his own lawn care, and drives an older pickup.
