Some people hear the pejorative "nouveau riche" from their childhood when their family discuss money and behaviour with them. Others don't and won't ever realize that there is still a class system out there and they aren't on top.

One thing I learned early in my life is don’t worry about the wealth of others. If it’s not my money then I do not concern myself with it. It changed my life and perspective. I appreciate and I am grateful for all the blessings in my life.

Poor people signal their poverty to other people all the time.

Insecurity
Thats what drives them to be wealthy in the first place. They attempt to use money as their life scorecard. Eventually they have to give it all away, when they die. And a lot of them dont pass it down to their own kids. Because they were such shitty humans in the run-up to wealth, that they produced kids that hate them
Its all rather fruitless. And its science, so . . . .

It's pretty gross, but so are they.

Most of. What you see on social media is fake. My parents and my dads siblings went in together to buy a condo on the beach in Hawaii. I go pretty often since there’s a condo calendar and if you 2ant to use it you book the dates and can go if no one beat you to it. Only like ten people have access so no fights ever. Do you know how many social media wanna be act like the live there and snap pictures of it right off the property line on the public beach? Wife and I sometimes just go on the patio enjoy the waves and laugh at them.

Jeff Bezos being the most extreme, farcical example. That wedding was absolutely obscene.
But your neighbors do it every day. Houses, cars, where they shop for groceries, their clothes, where they send their kids to school, etc.
Nothing new here. It's been ongoing for generations.
In the 1890's an economist named Thorstein Veblen wrote a series of papers he titled Theory of the Leisure Class. He used the term "conspicuous consumption" to explain the behavior.

It seems like most of this board hasn’t. Having a time share in Orange Beach doesn’t make you wealthy

My dad is the exact opposite. Grew up poor and he hates spending $. Still wears clothes that he wore back when I was kid in the 80s. He stopped driving last year, but up until then he was driving a 1996 Toyota Tercel.

How do you define rich people?

No man, not at all. Maybe one day.

If you had a net worth of about $5M and you spent less than $2k on your wedding, I would think you were frugal, to put it politely.
Jeff spent about 0.04% of his net worth on his 2nd wedding. That’s hardly showboating.

It’s the people on Facebook with pictures at the dealership with their new cars that I don’t get. Congratulations on your new note, I guess.
