When your remote has 50 buttons and 30 of them are never used, it can get confusing.

DirecTV caught on finally.

My dad is a virtuoso with one. I'm lucky if I can turn the TV on.

They're intimidated by multiple devices... don't be mean. Plus, you look like a total rockstar when you fix or explain it for them.

All I keep thinking is that one day I'll wish they were still around to ask me how the Netflix works or how to play a BluRay.

Depends. Is it 1980 or 2018?

What about them?

I drove them most of the time as a UPS driver.

I used to ask similar questions until I eclipsed 50. Now I feel like Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer with a lot of things and fully understand.

If I didn't have the internet, I would use the old brick phones. You could get service with those phones anywhere you went.

I gave my parents a Logitech remote programmed with the activities by name:

"Watch TV" - turns on all devices for this activity. TV goes to the correct input. Volume on the remote controls the surround sound. The channel up/down controls the cable box. Etc.

"Watch Movie" - does the same thing except for the Blu Ray player.

If you hit the activity button and it doesn't do what you want it to do, you press "Help" and it troubleshoots the situation with on screen commands that are simply "yes" or "no" answers. I didn't think it could get any easier.

I couldn't have been more wrong. My parents constantly turned the TV and cable box on manually, which the remote couldn't recognize, so when they told it to turn the TV on, it was actually turning it off. Tons of phone calls with my mom asking how to get the TV/cable box/surround sound to work properly. I'm trying to get her to give me a current status on each device and she's clueless. My dad is in the background bitching about how easy it was with 3 remotes before I got them down to one remote. Finally I just took the remote back and they went back to their 3 separate remote strategy. Drives me nuts but it works for them.

I used to get so frustrated with my mom, trying to instruct her how to find the ballgame before kickoff. It got so bad I was having to call a hour before kickoff. Ended up being the first stages of dementia. Seven years later she didn’t even know who she was and died. Don’t be like I was and get frustrated...you’ll regret it later.

I dunno about regular remotes, but our regular babysitter is in her late 50s/early 60s and I've tried walking her through my Amazon Fire TV and remote probably 5-10 times and she still has yet to figure it out. She just figures out how to go to the antenna channels and watches local garbage.

I disagree the new direct remote is the worst. Every button makes noise, the record button is too prominent.

The Cox Contour is the Best remote.
