So why is this such an accepted practice when the dangers and threat is so severe?
Because drinking and driving isn't that dangerous. Drunk or impaired driving is.

There's nothing quite like an iced down 24oz bud light on my commute home.

If you think I'm over .08 or more dangerous than someone on the same road playing on facebook, well then you're just stupid and biased towards one distraction.

I believe open container laws are absurd, almost as misplaced as your axe grinding attitudes here on the OT.

I do that too when friends are visiting. Because its usually for a football game or wedding or something like that where alcohol is in play all weekend.

Agree, the accident my daughter was in and the guy that hit me, both were well over the legal limit.

Both went to jail, so there's that.

You guys do have a checkpoint thread on here regularly.

"Accepted" is a strong word. DUI is "accepted" because EVERYBODY has done it. If you had the normal stereotypical college experience then you've done it. 2 ritas with a mexican meal and you're there. NOT SAYING ITS RIGHT!!!! But it happens.

Also, it is a nuissance for LEO. Cops chime in to help me out. How long does it take you out of an 8 or 10 hour shift to process a DUI? Of course if an accident is involved they have to, but to actively have a hard-on for DUI's and seek them out? What is thought of those LEOs among other cops? Add to it the court time after the arrest?

Open container laws are so illogical.

I can pick up a 6 pack on the way home and start to sip on the first one and won't have higher than .02 by the time I get home.

Were they over .1? That's where the limit should have stayed. with tiers of punishment at .16 and .2 (mandatory jail, felony, etc).

Judging by how stupid both wrecks were, I'd say yes.

And the funny thing is you sit in traffic or going 60mph sipping a beer and eyes on road the whole time. I'm far less likely to pick up the phone and dick around on social media if I've got a cold beer and thinking about shite I gotta do after work.

I'd love to hear your reasoning behind this.

Not in open container law states.

Roger that. I dont' condone drunks on the road. I just think the limit is too low and the subsequent offense punishments are WAY too low.

if it was back at .1 I would support.
1st offense - slap on wrist if under .16, 30 days in jail if over. 6 months in jail and felony if over .2
2nd offense - felony with 6 months jail no fricking slick lawyers wiggling out of it.

If it's a crowding issue, put the frickers on work release. But real deprivation of freedom is only thing that will change that culture down here.

Oh but you can thank the Catholic influence for Louisiana's drinking and drinking and driving culture. The state differs from the rest of the Protestant Bible Belt south.

It's so rampant because truthfully, the odds of getting caught are really low

Maybe that's because, despite what MADD tells you, a couple drinks will not turn you into a homicidal drunk swerving all over the road.

Texting is FAR more dangerous than the guy drinking a couple out of a 6-pack after a long day of work.

Um. Same a speeding. You can accidentally go over the speed limit, but if you're going 30 over, you knew what the frick you were doing.

Pounding shots at Bulldog after drinking a Masons all day long and then speeding down Perkins Road should NOT be the same offense as 5 beers at happy hour.
(You know what driver I'm talking about here don't you?)

Or maybe not everyone is as rampant an alcoholic as others. A couple of drinks affects everyone differently. Sure if you're used to drowning your sorrows in a 12 pack, nightly..you'll probably be OK. That's not the normal person, though.

Or gas stations selling iced down coldies. I mean who really buys an iced down 16 or 24oz beer if there is no plan to crack it open as soon as they get back in the car.

Also the small amount of DUIs written. Let's face it, if the law really wanted to crack down on drunk driving they could write 100s of these a night.

You sound like a potential ATC recruit, and a MADD mother.

Does Louisiana have a statewide open container law or is it just local ordnances?

You ignore that a large contingent of the purchasers of these items are of the "walk up" variety.
