Super interesting how the NFL started in smaller towns back then. You look at Pottsville for example is a small coal mining town in PA. Reading their Wiki page they were playing at a high school stadium and most of their players were local fireman. LINK
Pottsville is also where Yuengling is brewed BTW

There’s got to be more to it than that.
I’d say state/regional pride has a lot to do with it, as well as there just seems to be a lot more on the line than with a pro game, and people grow up with it being embedded in their upbringing, romanticized, and a part of local lore, plus a lot of those kids playing in college are from that state, and so that’s our kids playing. In the pros not so much. College Football has also been around longer, especially in the minds of locals, and so there’s a lot more history and affiliation.

The panhandle beaches are the perfect example. 90% of the sports gear you’ll see is SEC teams.
You see this because people dont know how to buy clothes without a college logo. LSU fans don't seem to own non logo'd clothes.

Because college football at this time is better. Roger Goodell destroyed the NFL.
Remember the NFL from the 90s and early 2000s?

Hurricanes have the most but to say the ONLY success in FL is there is a stretch
Hurricanes - 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991, and in 2001
Gators - 1996, 2006, 2008
'Noles - 1993, 1999, and 2013
OP was referring to the Dolphins (pro success)

I think it's because the NFL went woke crazy. They are a business and not everyone is in tune with taking the knee or them getting into a political fray.
We tuned in to see football and not to see political stunts.
The CFB>NFL in the South long predates this.

The college game also seems less corporate.
Tailgating for college games has always seemed waaaay easier and a lot more fun than doing so for NFL games.

That was just an example. Another one would be a huge upset for XYZ team and nobody knows it even happened.
Rather it’s like “oh did you see the bears beat the browns” who frickin cares

There’s a different connection with your states team than your city’s team. Kids not only grow up dreaming of playing for this team they also grow up dreaming of attending school there and doing the whole Greek life thing.
Saying your kid is going to an SEC school is a flex in the southeast. Especially if it’s an SEC school in another state.

NFL has far more jersey wearers too

Louisiana is way more pro LSU than pro Saints
I disagree with this statement. I have some LA tech and ULL friends that are diehard fans and they hate LSU. But everybody pulls for the Saints. Plus, there are a ton of outstate folks who pull for the Saints. I would say New Orleans has the bigger fan base.

I think it’s for 2 major reasons….
1. Family history… my dad’s family born in Louisiana grew up going to games for big events… special occasions. Grad present, gift from someone etc. Even though he moved to Mississippi, listening to games on WWL on Saturday nights was a family event. His dad also got tickets and drove down to see Maravich his favorite player.
2. College is more about connection… player from your hometown, having more diverse fan bases. Never wanted to go to church Sunday morning after losing to ole miss or state.
I watch and root for the saints but LSU will always have my heart. It’s just different.

The NFL started in the north, with decades of history and tradition in Green Bay/WI, Chicago, Cleveland, etc going back much further than pro football in the south.
Back in the old days all the south had was CFB.
Having said that let’s not forget Penn St and Michigan have a couple of the largest stadiums in the world and they always fill them. Add in OSU and ND and there are definitely enclaves of rabid CFB fans in the north.

You can say oh it’s because these states don’t have a pro team but most actually do and CFB is still way more popular.
Most of the rural south is all CFB. Even Louisiana is way more pro LSU than pro Saints. Georgia is more pro UGA than pro Falcons. Tennessee, Florida and so on. Texas is probably the only state that’s slightly more pro Cowboys than CFB but it’s still got a massive CFB foot print.
There’s got to be more to it than that.
1) CFB has been around longer
2) The only two NFL teams in the south that have enjoyed any decent sustained measure of success are Miami and Dallas, and both of those had their successes more than 20 years ago. And, those two cities aren't really even southern cities, especially Miami.
I mean you have Texans, Jags, Titans (had popularity as the Oilers), Saints, Bucs, Panthers, Falcons.. all of which are in states where there is at least one college team that has had more sustained success than the NFL team.

Well, the Saints was created in 1967. LSU had already been around for many decades and won a title. The Saints were terrible for a long time before seeing success.
The Falcons first season was in 1966. The Buccaneers first season was 1976. The Texans first season was 2002. The college teams have just been around longer and had already created steep traditions.

I think it has to do with several things all at once. One big thing is college teams were comprised mainly of guys from the home state so very likely there were players from your area on the team. That has changed some the last 30-40 years, but teams like LSU are still local heavy on talent.

Probably because the south is more conservative politically. The NFL is pure woke and supports racial agendas. CFB is more about supporting a team, not a cause.
