Well a major problem with that per was the generalization from a small sample size (N = 8). Yet, you are generalizing the quality (or lack thereof) of a entire nation's research (also home to some of the top universities in the world) based on an even smaller sample size (N = 1).

Not really, I'm just messing with the OP.

He thinks that he is quoting two different surveys:
In 1985, the NCDS was moved to the Social Statistics Research Unit (SSRU), which is now known as the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS). (from wiki)

If you want to believe that doing drugs makes you smarter, you better really know that's the case.

Hell, everybody in prison must be a Mensa member.

That's not what anyone is saying.

Honestly, wouldn't it be more likely that smarter people would use drugs simply b/c they had access to more discretionary income?

Smart people are curious but more responsible. That's why college kids do shrooms, acid, smoke weed, etc but don't frick with meth, heroin, etc. Stupid people also listen to authority blindly and aren't inclined to try things that they are told are bad for them. Reminds me of my redneck friends that call weed dope.

That's one reason, but that didn't explain it all. This is the whole point of the study. Not that drugs make people smarter; instead why are smarter people more likely to use drugs?

I can't believe very bright people would be curious about mind expansion.

That is a part of it, yes.

I think another part is intelligent people see past all of the propeganda (DARE is a good example).

I think that is more likely.

No need to work, access to money, youthful experimentation.

Some people might take this the wrong way, but most stupid people work jobs that require drug testing.

Students and a lot of white collar employees/business owners don't get tested.

My guess is the "dumber" kids lied about their drug use or lack thereof. Probably because they saw their peers/parents get in trouble and were suspicious of any tests asking about their drug use.

IDK, a lot of high-salaried jobs, in IT, banking, and the public sector, are subject to random testing.

Anything with any kind of clearance, testing is there.

This. Bleeds into many other facets of their lives as well.

If you want to smoke doobies with your homeless pals and justify it with some "research" by a fly-by-night British organization then fine, go for it. But do not slander the good name of DARE. Those people have been saving lives through education on the real life dangers of marijuana for decades.

I know some people that are extremely intelligent, and didn't amount to shite because they did a lot of drugs.

Few tech companies drug test, much less randomly; there would be exponentially less labor in an already strapped space. Furthermore, passing an employment drug test is not remotely difficult -- it isn't like they're watching you piss and they even give you notice to prepare. Substituting a urine sample is absurdly easy.

Bankers do a great deal of partying.

The public sector is littered with marginal talent, from the C-Suite on down.
