It became trashy when they stopped requiring .edu emails to sign up.

The more you open things up to the majority of the population, the trashier things become because most of humans are trashy. Facebook started more as a social platform for elite universities. Then it opened up to most college kids, then to most young adults, then to your 30s-40s crowd as MySpace faded, then to all ages. The more that filter opened up the trashier it got.
Take LSU football for example. Most things associated with ‘fans’ are trashy as f*** since LSU won a natty in ‘03. It generated a ton more interested and fanhood from those uneducated, non-graduates, local Louisiana folk who are stereotypically trashy.
