You think there aren’t entitled military folks who basically did nothing in their whole career to appreciably contribute to national security?

Who doesn’t?

The vast majority of the military you are complaining about.

First, they make a lot more money.

Second, no long-haul trucker does it for the money they can make, not out of a sense of service. While some servicemen definitely do it out of a sense of service. Not all but some.

Third, they are not required to put themselves in harm's way in the manner that military people do.

Some of that they bring on themselves. The guys who are good people are some of the best you will ever meet. The ones who aren't are pretty sketchy.

Yes, I know several and had a family member who did that for a living.

I agree.

But truckers are literally irrelevant to everything.

And their job is about to be replaced by automation.

I’d put grocery store workers (especially ones who worked during the pandemic) far ahead of the military and truckers as far as my respect is concerned.

It’s their job. Lots of people provide a valuable service to the community.

I used to work in transportation and logistics years ago. Not all by any means, but most truckers I was around were total POS human beings.

I don’t know, I’ve been around a lot of drivers. Those with I half a brain aren’t hurting. Unfortunately, that’s a very small percentage.

Long Haul Truck Drivers move America. Everyday they go about quietly moving the stuff we need to make life better for our families.

Sure they're important, but have you ever had to deal with any? On the whole, they have got to be the most unreliable group in any important profession.

What about carpenters and pipe-fitters? Electricians when power is knocked out by storms. I never got the whole police thing with parades and motorcycles. Why is one thing a person does more important than the next? Everyone is important to the big picture. I sure hope that I didn't offend anyone. Not!

As a retired Airman (32 years), I agree there is no job more essential that a truck driver. Without them, nothing happens. Our military is way bloated and most military members contribute little to the mission. Give me the authority and I'll cut the military by 1/2 and get more done.

The majority of them chose the military because their options were limited.
I’m not knocking military folks, but most of them just needed a job and the the sign-on bonus.

That may be. But how does that minimize their service or sacrifice? It actually makes it a bigger deal, more important. If one has few options at age 18, they choose to serve their country and potentially die in return for the benefits they get - pay, education, GI bill, VA healthcare, home buying assistance, and the camaraderie and alumni/veteran network. Many of these benefits last a long time. Sure beats being a bum and taking handouts like some folks do.

I have the utmost respect for folks that have the smarts to realize they don't have many options and volunteering.

My grandfathers on both sides were those guys. One was a bit of a screw up that had exhausted his options at home, one lost his father and was doing odd jobs until he was eligible. Both paid heavy prices, getting sick, injured, lost behind enemy lines, almost certainly shortened their lives. Neither lived anywhere close to the average male life. But my parents and sister and I have good lives because of it.

Corporations are just now harnessing machine learning for predictive data models but somehow automated trucks will be rolling out soon.

Some of yall need to stay in your lanes.
