Some people:
Don’t have a car to evacuate
Don’t have a place to go
Can’t afford hotels

Other than just being stubborn or stupid, I think these are the main reasons.

Nothing like sitting in a hot arse house for days. Shitting in buckets. Cell phone dead. No fortnite. Mosquitos and the creeping madness.

You have two types of people here...

Some can't afford to evacuate and/or don't understand the magnitude of what is happening.

Others(my FIL) believe they have a generator and built high enough to escape anything.

Some people under-estimate the strength of a hurricane. Other people refuse to leave for whatever sentiment. Others can’t leave, like emergency personnel.

They've been given nearly a week's notice and it's a mandatory evacuation notice. These people will be the same people the coast guard will be plucking off rooftops, rapid water rescues, etc.

1) Houses built since Andrew are hurricane proof

2) Can you even fathom the traffic? People here complain about getting out of Tiger Stadium after a game. This will be 1000% worse.

3) The actual path of devastation will be 5% of the projected 1 day cone.

People are willing to roll the dice to avoid the traffic and hassle of evacuating. Gas stations are dry, hotels fully booked for 300 mile radius.

It's simple human nature.

Here in Florida we constantly get evacuation notices for hurricanes and most of the time hurricanes do no damage either fizzling out or turning up north. The Weather Channel hypes these things up so much. Just think back to all the damage the hurricane Matthew did when they had to cancel the LSU v UF game in Gainesville a couple years ago. Exactly. Zilch.

I got them a inner tube. They'll stay above water if needed.

I drove through Refugio just last week....it's not exactly New York City when it comes to entertainment options unless you think picking cotton is like a Broadway show.

I left for rita and almost had to shoot an ole boy at a gas station. Made it 100 miles then couldn't find gas or lodging. Rode it out in my 1 ton with a 6 month old . Then spent 3 weeks without power.
Since then we have made it through ike and Harvey. House is built up and I have a 20kw generator. Plus a 10k diesel generator in my shop. I have 3 boats if shite gets bad enough I'll jump in the flat bottom and run to higher ground.. I'm not leaving and being blocked from coming back into the county..

I agree to a point. TWC is over the top with their coverage of smaller storms. But this MF is the real deal at this point with no signs of weakening.

We live in Savannah as well and did not evacuate the last two years either. Came close to leaving for Matthew though.

Hurricane proof? That’s a negative bud.

As someone who evacuated for Ivan, Katrina and Gustav I can tell you that it takes work. Some people who have never experienced a storm will will err on the side of lazy. Others who think they've weathered a major hurricane but were actually miles from the real power will blow it off.
