I am sure some do. However, I keep reading articles on how so many residents of the Louisiana and southern Texas areas are hurting badly over the drop in oil prices.

If they work in such a volatile industry, why not save 20% of the money in savings and live off of 80% of the money (after taxes of course).

Also, if they have such a lucrative job then surely they can make connections to find 'holdover' positions in a different industry until things stabilized.

For sure.

I gave up my job the other day so an oil field guy I know could have it. Seems like the right thing to do.

This isn't isolated to the oil industry. Your average American is horrible at making smart financial decisions and saving money. I'd venture to guess that 80% of working class citizens couldn't make it a year on their savings with little to no income.

More to the point, it provides opportunities to blacks who may not necessarily have any better options. It also opens doors to people who may have had some difficulties with their previous educational endeavors (such as myself)

The majority live just like anyone else and they were prepared for the downturn. Unfortunately you only read about the ones that weren't prepared cause that's what makes a good news story.

Most people do not have adequate savings no matter the industry they work in

Most of this industry are hard working kids just out of high school. They are away for weeks or months at a time. Then see that check and dont know how to handle it. They are now grown and dont have any guidance. Creates a lifestyle that usually doesnt change as they grow into their 30's or 40's.

because most didn't even attempt to go to college. some dropped out in high school. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to turn a wrench, but it does take someone with an education to plan for the future and downturns.

They invest in boats, Sea-Doos and 4-wheelers to guard against inflation.
