cell phones in the class was a direct or indirect cause of a lot of problems in the class.

Does the school your children attend prohibt phones in class. I know some do and some don't.

Parents bitching about not having a direct line to their kids. Some schools just don't want to deal with the headache.

My daughter's school doesn't prohibit possession of them but they don't let the kids use them in class. The first time you are caught they take it and the parent has to go to the school and sign for the kid to get it back. The 2nd time they take it for the rest of the school year.

Probably easier for all involved. If a kids going to be disruptive, better for them to be in the back on TikTok than trying to fight the teacher.

Teachers shouldn't be babysitters

The rest of the school year? That is not a battle most schools would be willing to fight

Yep, my daughter fricked around and found out for incident #1 so she's terrified to have it taken a 2nd time

She and I both had to sign a piece of paper saying the next time it was gone until May. This is high school.

Our kids can't touch their phones from bell to bell.
It's a suspension if they do.

The district I teach in (I’m at the hugh school level) has no policy, they just leave it up to us to do what we want. Makes things absolute hell. My first year I tried taking one girls phone and mom emailed me chewing me out within the hour. Decided I was done fighting that battle then and there. I let them dick around and fail if that’s what they want. I’m just upfront with them at the start of the year/semester with what’s gonna happen.

It's not the phone that is the problem.

My son can use his phone at school but they are taught to only use it when appropriate on downtime and breaks. If you are using it during class you lose it but teaching the kids to act right is much better than a zero tolerance policy.

They allow them for perception of safety, be it a parent needs to get in touch or there is an attack on a school, but teaching kids to be responsible is a much better reason to allow them.

A teacher I knew had his class silence them and he’d give them 10 mins a couple of times in the 1.5 hour class to check their phones and do their social media thing. It worked out well.

They shouldn’t be allowed at all. A parent can quickly contact their kids in case of emergency by calling the school.

I graduated high school in 09. The rule was you could have one but not use it in class. If you were caught using it then it was confiscated. Wasn’t really an issue.

A teacher has no right to take a phone and shouldn’t. Send kid to office, call parents. Just like a school isn’t keeping the phone if I pay for it. I will get it and ensure it won’t return.

(And the OT makes a mental note to ask for pics in 2026)

Seems my granddaughter isn't allowed to use a phone in class, but she has an Apple watch, which she uses.

They can use them at school, just not in class. If I text her during the day, she'll usually answer me within an hour or so.
