Parents bitching about not having a direct line to their kids
I guess I am getting old and only know about school from when I was in school, but why do parents really need having a direct line to their kids while they are in school?
Look, I understand if there is a situation at school a child is able to let their parents know they are okay, but if you weigh out the positives and negatives, I have to think the negatives of allowing kids have phones at school outweigh the positives.
In the long run, it would actually probably be better for kids if they are not allowed to have their cellphones during the day. There are going to be things that happen in which people will say "if only they were allowed to have cellphones this could have been avoided", but that's just life. There are a lot of things we could do because something might happen.
This is another issue when the parents are the real problem. If the parents are against certain rules then the kid isn't going to respect the rules and this is part of the reason there are certain issues schools have to deal with today. That's why kids are soft today.

I’m very involved in my kids schooling. Teachers can do no wrong…. Yet they have sex with kids, kids have more issues, and our society is going to crap.
Right, this is definitely important for the discussion. I’ve taught many kids that have been beaten and abused by parents. Nobody is saying teachers do no wrong. I’m not sure what complaining about with this.

Uvalde
Kids need to be able to report active shooters in their schools so cops can stay clear of that area.

This place routinely shits on teachers. I know, because I am one.

They sleep w their students, have vapes throughout the school, bullying, lowest academic standards in the last few years and advocated for kids to stay home from school and close schools during covid.
All of these pertain to some, not all teachers. Your blanket statements are ignorant, and seem to come from a place of emotion. If your child is like this, teachers probably have to give him or her extra attention.

And the teachers are douche bags, you guys watch kids al year and bitch about how it’s the parents.
Yes, this is a rational, well-thought statement that shows your character. I can only imagine having a conference with you. If this is how you defend little Johnny, I’d walk out of the room.

frick that. No school is going to physically take a kid’s phone and lock it away for a certain amount of time lol

I don’t agree with schools taking someone’s phone but I do agree school should be able to suspend the kid for having them there if they are banned

Mine does, but just as with every other rule or policy, the consequences are a fkn joke - so it's basically not worth the trouble of me trying to enforce it.
If I'm actively teaching a lesson then I make them put it away, but other than that, I don't fight it
I'm at a "B" rated school, and let me tell you, it's all smoke, mirrors, and sleight of hand fuzzy math to come up with these fake arse ratings.

“Ya that's theft. You can go get it back that evening just have to use a little legal talk to scare them. Seen ppl talk about it before and how they got it back, some were smother but one threatened to call the cops for theft.
Edit: no problem with them taking if for the day if they were using it when not supposed to. Anything longer I have a problem with.”
An intelligent person/student/parent wouldn’t have “a problem with it” due the rules being set out in advance. Said rules don’t take the phone long term on first offense- it takes two infractions for the long term penalty to kick in. Failure to follow rules has consequences in all aspects of life-not just cell phones.
I can imagine the law showing up only to learn that a parent wants their kid’s phone back from the school that took it due to policy infraction. What an absolute abuse of the police’s time. A parent calling the police over this is not an intelligent move. A terrible lesson for the kid as well.
I’ve edited to add I no longer have kids in school. The school that they attended did not allow cell phone usage in the classroom. I fully supported the school because the policy was put out in advance.

Decided I was done fighting that battle then and there. I let them dick around and fail if that’s what they want.
Yeah but if too many kids start failing then the parents and administrators will come for you.
Teachers cant win.

Low academic standards aren't the teachers' fault.

A school also isn’t going to keep a phone in their desk all year. And everyone who is taking my comment wrong would absolutely have a melt down and come here to post about it.
My kids high school has two strikes and your phone is gone for the year. We are all adults and understand the penalty ahead of time. Thankfully the parents at our school don't have the "but it's muh property" mentality. Then again that's why we're at a charter. Kids don't have locks on their lockers either if that doesn't tell you something about the school and kids.

My son was in high school 25 years ago. I never understood why the school would let kids bring their phones to school much less in the classroom
I used to call the office and check myself out early from my bag phone in my vehicle back in 1997

Graduated in '04 and pretty much everyone had phones in my school at that time. At least most people I knew did. You were technically not allowed to have them at all on campus outside of keeping it in your car. However they were pretty relaxed since there are kids that didn't drive, but had after school activities and such. However if it was seen outside of your backpack, you were getting in trouble.

My daughter did a Teach for America gig after college. She ended up teaching at a NE inner city high school. The principal told them to take up their phone if they saw them using it in class.
Another TFA teacher asked if they should send them to the office if they refused to give up the phone. The principal said no, that the teachers had to deal with it in the classroom.
My daughter had a kid answer a call. She walked over and told him to give her his phone. He shook his head. She insisted. He lowered his head. The another kid explained what was about to go down to my naive little girl -- she said, "He's fixin' to hit you."
Given some of the things she had already seen at this school, she decided she was not going to take a punch for a principal who would not back them up.
