Texas will be majority Hispanic in the future. SC and Georgia may have lower overall poverty rates but I think they'll be on a similar trajectory.
What happens when poor citizens that depend on the government are a voting majority? I have no clue but I think it's coming in the next 50-60 years for some places.

I was at the governors inauguration a few months ago and when they announced all the politicians in attendance he had people give him a standing ovation (a small percentage albeit).
I’m so disillusioned with this state, and am fully convinced that it is so far beyond fixing there’s no point in trying.

Louisiana just needs a run of few good governors in a row. They can still be scumbags, they just need to also be skilled politicians and promote policies that will better the state.
Tennessee was in bad shape in 2002 - Medicaid was fricking the budget, no rainy day fund, the metros here were nothing special, no outside investment.
2002 governor election came down to a skilled state legislator in Van Hilleary (R) and the former mayor of Nashville Phil Bredeson (D). Race was all about income tax and TennCare. Bredeson spent the whole campaign saying Hilleary would throw kids off Medicaid. Once he got elected, what did he do? Threw a bunch of kids off Medicaid (I was one, fyi). But that helped fix the state budget and he began attracting outside investment.
2 popular terms for him was followed by Bill Haslem (R). The Haslems, Bill's brother Jimmy owns the Cleveland Browns remember, turned their gas station frick-it money into major political power. Jimmy flirted with conflict of interest positions for two terms, but he also continued marketing Tennessee as the next big state in the South and a destination for investment and, most importantly, he vetoed most of the social conservative bullshite the pandering shitbags in the state legislature put forward once they got a Republican governor.
If you all could find even one candidate, regardless of party, that could model the success around you (Texas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee) you could get back on the path to recovery.
