Why does it ALWAYS take forever at cell phone companies?

I took my parents up to Verizon today to get new phones. They have always been on their business plan which they recently sold the business.
We were the only customers in the building.
We were there for an hour and 15 minutes!
After that time there, I convinced them to tell Verizon to frick off and just go up to Walmart and get on board with straight talk for $45/month - we walked out
Oh, and by the way, Verizon was $279/month for 2 phone lines compared to $90/month with StraightTalk
I have been on straight talk for 4 years and IMO it’s just as good as Verizon. I might have some internet issues in very rural areas but other than that it’s very solid.
It’s just insane to me how expensive and slow/shitty brick and mirror store they have become

They want these sales people up selling so much it adds time. I call the manager who I know before I get there to make sure it’s not busy.

Well it is a message board soooooo
Can you explain to me why cell phone companies take forever everytime you visit one? What could possibly take that long for them to type up a premade quote, grab a phone off the shelf, scan it into their computer and get you out the door in 20 minutes?

I’ve never entered a cell phone store before and I doubt I ever will.

Went to AT&T today to turn in 3 old phones since we ordered new ones that came in this week. I was seen quickly but the process was so cumbersome for each phone to be put in their system and to issue me the credit. It took well over 30 minutes and the guy was working as fast as he could. He had to click a thousand buttons to get through the process for each phone. Surely they can find a way to make that process more streamlined. I would hate training new people on how to do that, there are so many steps where things can go wrong.

Minimum wage or near minimum wage employees & low quality systems

I don’t think it had anything to do with the employees. It’s their corporate procedures/computer system, etc

Even the people doing the training at AT&T don't have a fricking clue. The two times that they've fricked me the hardest involved a manager and a girl that had worked at the store for 5 years. The girl did something that even the highest level of problem resolution (people in the US who speak English as their native language) couldn't figure out how she managed to frick up what she fricked up. His exact words were, "I couldn't do what she managed to do if I wanted to, and I've had more training than any of them."
Never underestimate the ability of AT&T to frick something up......ever.

Just got on T Mobile after years with AT&T. I needed a new phone and my mom tells me she's with T Mobile and has the 55 and older plan. First line $40, 2nd $25, & 3rd is free. So I got on her plan, with tax and all, its $74 for both. Unlimited talk & text & 50 gigs of data. Had to buy the phone though, and put $150 down. But I got last years model and just payed $500.
Where I live, I usually only had 1 bar with AT&T, I'm full with T Mobile, have better service all around & satisfied.
BTW, my att bill was $140 for one phone.
Others in my family have cricket & have no issues. There are alot more less expensive options nowadays

This plan sounds great for my parents who are around 70 years old. Will check them out. Thanks for posting!

I have no idea considering the phone was (free) - insane if you ask me

Added a new line online the other day, took 10 minutes. Picked it up in store within the hour from a locker, never had to interact with a human.
I do it online because I recall the days of going to the store, and it sucked donkey balls.

I hate AT&T with a passion. I switched to tmobile a couple years ago and could not be happier with them.

Went to att to buy a usbc charging block since it’s close by. Took 15-20 mins to check out.
