Why does ginger ale help when you’re sick?

I don’t drink soda but every time I’m sick I want ginger ale to settle my stomach... what’s up with that? Is there actual benefits of it? Is it placebo effect?

Ginger has antiemetic properties.

Untrue if you have real ginger ale. Ginger can actually relieve nausea

carbonation plus ancient Chinese ginger voodoo

Ginger is good for nausea but Ginger Ale doesn't do anything (pretty sure most ginger ale doesn't actually have ginger in it)

I pretty much like a ginger anytime, whether sick or not.

As already posted, ginger is actually quite effective at reducing nausea. It was one of few things that helped my grandmother when she was going through chemo.
But with that said, she was putting down straight ginger extract. Modern ginger ale has little to no actual ginger in it. So, once upon a time, it likely had a real effect, but now it’s psychosomatic.

The amount of ginger in ginger ale is negligible. The sugar will "quench" your thirst for a moment then you'll want more. This can lead to dehydration.
It could be a net negative.
Unless you think it'll help. Purely psychosomatic.

Ginger is pretty effective if you're in rough seas. I usually take some or drink real ginger ale before tackling them

Mostly because it gives your body the immediate, easy to digest carbs it needs to help fight the infection. The carbonation also helps settle your tummy. Sprite will have the same effect.

I’m not saying I wouldn’t, because I would, but that chick needs an eyebrow intervention.

Speaking of... anyone drink that Vernors shite? I see it in the store but never see anyone actually buying or drinking the stuff.

We had Vernor’s around the house as a kid, I don’t remember it being anything special.
