The fact that I can't go into petsmart and select the right nexguard or simparica for my dogs weight is absolutely absurd.

Are you confusing heartworm preventative with just flea/tick preventative?
Heart worm preventative requires the vets prescription. Simparica and nexgaurd are heartworm preventatives that also have flea and tick protection.

If you go get just flea/tick medicine, you don’t need a prescription.

Treated my whole pack of beagles (6 ) for less than it would have cost to treat just one at a vet, with some meds from Australia a while back - for heartworms after 1 tested positive when I brought her to get fixed.

You just give them higher / continuous doses of the preventative meds, which i got online without a prescription from some Australian pet meds websites.

You need to be literate and careful to follow the dosage per weight instructions.

If you don’t have good reading comprehension skills, just go to a vet and pay the $.

There’s always a danger of the dog dying from an embolism due to the dead worms clogging up the arteries no matter how you approach it.

No prescription needed for flea and tick, you can buy that at any pet store or online. Now if you are talking about heartworm prevention, yes you need a prescription. I paid $54 2x a year from my vet for heartworm (pro heart injection).

If you don’t understand why the Rx is needed you’re too stupid to buy it on your own

Pretty much the same reason as it is for humans: if it can kill you or seriously mess you up by taking just an extra dose or two, it's gonna be prescription.

But if you go to Canada Pet Meds you can order flea and tick same brand no prescription for a lot less money.

Well I guess it wasn’t important for you to examine the point of what I was saying, rather you thought it would be better to over analyze the example I used.

How about this - the drugs listed by the OP are prescription strength drugs for animals. Much like there are prescription allergy medicines for people, and there are also over the counter ones. Not all flea preventives are prescription strength.

As shocking as that is to some of you, it is a thing. Sorry you can’t comprehend it. If you don’t like it, but the Wal mart brand and go with that.

Yes. You can buy Rx meds cheap in a lot of other countries without Rx. What’s your point?

I get what you are saying, and I am aggravated about this too, but it is a prescription drug. It's probably the same reason we can't just walk into Walmart and buy Oxy.

You are comparing flea and tick meds to Oxy?

I give my dogs the heart and worm meds that has the flea and tick meds in it. Every year I have to pay over $350 to pretty much get the heart worm/flea and tick meds. I've used two different vets and I had to see them before I could get their meds.

The last time I went I was told both of my dogs would need their teeth cleaned and that when I called for an appoint for their next visit to schedule a cleaning, which cost almost $300 a dog. I told her their teeth is fine. I give them bones that clean their teeth, neither one has dog breath. I check to see if they have tar on their teeth, if I see a little build up, I have a tooth brush I used to get it off. Vets will try to nickel and dime the piss out of you

Actually, I was comparing prescription medicine to prescription medicine.

Some of you are just being intentionally obtuse about this. It’s really not that complicated. Animals…yes, animals…have prescriptions medicine too.

Another vote for Canada pet care. It works, it's cheaper and no rx nonsense

online is definitely the place to go for pet meds. i had a dog with a terminal disease that required a daily steroid treatment. the name brand meds here in the states was costing $70 month. found and bought a years supply online from india and ended up costing about $100 for the entire year.

Speaking of obtuse. The question is, why? Are pit bulls know for getting addicted to heartworm meds and it would be too dangerous to let them buy it over the counter?

No not really.

But also, learn how to make your point clear. You suck at writing.

The key is to brown it in a frying pan before you put it in the oven. You get a really nice crust that way.

It’s a fair question, I wasn’t getting into the why. I was just pointing out that some medicine is prescription strength and some is not.

I would imagine that incorrect dosing could be harmful, and the manufacturers want to pass that risk to the consumer and vet as much as possible.

In the US, people sue companies over stuff that was caused by their own idiocy and ignorance alone. Not sure why this category would be any different.
