Demand is far outpacing any government mandates or expert predictions.

Crazy how people want these things.

Aluminum batteries are in development now. Lithium batteries have a limited lifespan.

Let me help you out kid, if you want lithium in the amounts required to supply the whole country in electric vehicles, you’re gonna have to move a whole lot of dirt.

The majority of the known recoverable lithium is not in pegmatites but in brine. But you do you old man.

There is no reason to ignore the revolution happening in energy storage if you need a good reason that has nothing to do with the EV itself not pursuing EVs is the perfect way to ceding control to China and giving up one more competitive edge. Is that what you really want?

Yes, electricity still causes pollution to make. But it can be made in more remote areas and thus reduce city smog.

Just how do you think they make that wonderful thing called electricity?
Fossil fuel power plants are roughly twice as efficient as the engine in your car. Accounting for line losses, charge losses, and efficiency of the EV itself, it's still about 50% more efficient to run an EV on purely fossil fuel electricity than to burn them in an ICE engine directly. It's also easier to mitigate at a central power station than across thousands of vehicles. So that's kind of worst case improvement of EV over ICE, and of course it gets better as the mix goes more renewable.

Yeah, what do I know. I’ve just worked for the world’s largest manufacturer of earthmoving mining equipment where decisions are made base actual geological studies, market studies, etc. I’ve been in meeting here this very subject was discussed by scientists far smarter than you or I. They say the transition to electric would usher in an era of strip mining the likes the world has never seen. What do they know? You on the other hand have Google that will feed you article after article of stuff that conforms to your indoctrinated biases. But you do you kid.

Not when it’s forced by the government. If the market dictates electric cars then we’ll end up there. The government should not be paying for any electric infrastructure.

I have a real concern the waste materials will end up being far worse for the environment than we know.

I am no different than the OP, my mind is made up, it is possible I could change, but nothing I have read in this thread or a hundred others like it has convinced me EVs are something that is even needed. EV proponents are like politicians they have a set of talking points, and I’ve heard them all.

This is the thing that gets me with this board. EVs present an incredible opportunity for American domination of a rapidly growing industry. An industry that japan is wayyy behind in. And the Patriots of the OT hate them. Hilarious.

fully electric vehicles can last soooo much longer than a combustible engine

Yeah we definitely do NOT know the longevity of electric vehicles on a massive/US-wide scale. It may turn out to be true, but as of now this is a silly statement

For me it's mostly an issue of personal freedom and self-sufficiency. Even in these early days of the technology, prices have already come so far down that an individual can own all of the equipment necessary to operate an EV indefinitely. You can't do that with gasoline. You will always rely on a corporation to keep you going on a daily/weekly basis, and the price of oil will always impact you.

In all seriousness, you will probably burn through equal amounts of lithium ion batteries during every day use and throw away over the life of the car.

The car lithium ion has a better chance of being saved and recycled than the 10 rechargeable devices you throw away every year.

I loved watching the smaller model Tesla whip in and out of traffic on the interstate today on my way back from Cruising the Coast. We were in a group of vehicles all hauling arse back west fracturing a few traffic laws. I was impressed until he had to pull over to the side of the road, and we all passed on by.

Guess he lost his charge.

A lot of folks around here depend on the O&G industry.

I think people don't get the potential for drastically reducing the cost of energy, and what that will do for an economy. With FF energy you have to constantly feed the beast, every unit of output requires a unit of input that costs money. Wind, solar, tidal, and other renewables don't have that unit cost. The vast majority of the expense is the initial investment. This same calculation plays out whether you own an EV or if you install solar panels or if you build a large renewable energy plant. Everything we do requires energy, and everything we build is embodied energy, so cheap and stable energy costs lubricates an economy.
