Why do we tolerate our highway departments being gluttonous with their highway projects?

For instance, DOT is going to add a turn lane to a road. But that isn’t enough. We have to have bike lanes on each side of the road (which will almost never be used). Extra wide sidewalks that hardly anyone will walk on and even wider medians. Totally screwing all the landowners on the road by taking land that isn’t really needed. And then the paving job is shitty at the end.
We should have more private roads.

It’s an easy way to funnel money back to political allies and supporters.

because doing so gets it qualified for matching federal funds.
whether they need it or not, if they can get their greedy little hands on ANY federal money they will spend it, even if its for a bird watching rest area

Would you rather the bike ride on the same part of the road as cars?

I’d rather people stop riding bikes once they reach puberty.

I don’t have a problem with them but many folks in the States numbered 40-50 do and will.
And the political climate in most of the 40s States does not generally favor toll road construction.
Louisiana is firmly in the 40s. Sadly.

It’s a good thing very few people have the same opinions as you.

Out of all the DOTD complaints, this one is low on the list

Politics. DOTD builds what DOTD is funded (told) to build. If you took all of the politicians out of the equation we would have a bridge and a loop . . . and thousands of pissed off people that had their property expropriated.

I agree with that statement.

Sounds like a pansie arse thing to be upset about

Your objections presume nothing changes.
Conservatism is built upon Spell check tied to yesteryear. Maga back to before sidewalks.
If you have sidewalks more people can safely walk. Its healthy. Same with bikes.

I opened this thread expecting to type some sarcastic answer like "so I can make more money as a consultant" thinking youd have a good point about the money the state wasted.
Then i read this quote, and my friend you have it totally backwards.
Private roads? Sure, not problem.
But how dare you HOW DARE YOU screw over the disenfranchised and those willing to use alternative methods. That type of mindset will ensure that wherever you live is backwards and behind the times. Go worship your cars if you must, but don't do it at the expense of others.

Aesthetics aside, I really don't see many people using their front yards as anything other than a bit of separation between their house and the vehicle noise on the street. A bike lane and extra wide sidewalk doesn't impede that function.
As a motorist, I would rather little Jimmy bike his happy arse to baseball practice instead of needing to rely on mom to clog up the roads on a meaningless 2 mile trek, all because we forgot to build 600ft of sidewalk and inadvertently made the roads a deathtrap to anybody that's not securely anchored inside a vehicle.
