Discrimination happens every day in our society. You being too fat to fit in a seat should mean you damn sure are discriminated against in the form of being forced to pay for an extra seat or not fly.
Anyway, I've found in my travels the obese people generally aren't found in the Economy Plus (or equivalent) seating areas. So I always upgrade if I don't get the upgrade automatically for status. Usually cheaper than a 1st Class domestic by quite a bit. Now when I fly to Seattle each year, I just go with 1st.
