Why do we care about JonBenet Ramsey?

Nearly 23 years ago that precious little girl was murdered. It was a horrific crime and there was a lot of mystery surrounding the murder. Was it the mom, the dad, the 9 year old son, or some creep in the night? Who knows.
My question is why was it (is it) such a cultural phenomenon? Because she came from a wealthy family in a nice neighborhood? Is that all it takes?
Little girls are murdered or go missing all the time. Just recently in Tennessee a little girl was taken by her dad and murdered. You'll never hear about it. Little black girl shot and killed in Chicago - the police have no idea who did it, we'll probably never know, and you'll never hear about it.
Can anyone tell me why JonBenet's life was so much more important than all these other kids? Or why we pretend to care so much about children who are murdered or missing, but only when the case meets certain criteria?

Because it was a bizarre case involving a wealthy white family and the beauty queen daughter. Also hit during a time when 24 hour news was starting to really find purchase in the culture.

The brother had nothing to do with it. Nobody close to the case believes that or ever believed that. That’s OJ jury type analysis.

Also because Boulder was the perfect boutique town. There was a note. She was cute. The dad had a successful company. They were respected in the community. The weirdness of the beauty pageants. There were many factors that made that story pop.

Because the genuine weirdness of the case combined with what seems to be almost criminal incompetence by the investigating authorities provides fertile ground for all sorts of theories.

The majority of people are selfish and could give two shits about anything outside of their sphere.
Most life is soon forgotten by most.
