Anyone who's played sports in a high school level would understand. It's just the "comfort" feeling associated with playing in your own gym that you're used to.

OP, think about cooking a meal in your kitchen vs a strangers. Where will you cook the better meal? And even a 6th grader who plays knows why. A smart one.

Read the book called Scorecasting.
You'll either change your opinion or disagree with facts.

I would think the pros would be affected due solely to the hassle of traveling, esp in MLB where they're on the road long stretches, and in the NFL if there's the crowd noise.

There have been some studies suggesting a testosterone and adrenaline surge for the home team and a slight decrease for the visitors. Kind of a evolutionary hold over for defending one's turf. Then add in familiarity, crowd support(it does in fact have a definite physiological effect on both sides), and travel fatigue. Added to the fatigue, we are creatures of habit by nature. Changes in our routines stresses the body and mind. Even if to a small degree, it can have a definite effect.

I do think that could have some negative impact, just as much as positive, though.
If you Google "Scorecasting home field", you can find all kinds of good articles summarizing the findings in the book, its good reading.

But then there is the pressure relief of not playing in front of your home crowd where expectations can lead to higher stress.

A high school classmate of mine theorized that the home field/court advantage is due to having a familiar toilets to crap on. Visiting players can't relax on strange toilets, and all it takes is one player being uncomfortable to effect a team's play.
After laughing at him I decided his theory was as good as any other.

there is absolutely no way you're serious.

I think Under Armour said it best "We Must Protect This House!"

Think about it, you get to sleep at your home, you get to do your ritual, you have control over when you show up and when you eat and things like that and that's not even talking about he crowd etc.

From Girls JV Water Polo to College Basketball to the English Premier League to the NFL. Over the course of time literally 98% of teams will have a better record at home than they will on the road. So no matter what the reason is Home advantage is 100% undeniable.

I don't totally understand it either, particularly in certain sports. Football is the one that makes the most sense to me though.
However, did you guys have basketball goals in your driveway growing up? I was a decent basketball player anywhere but on my goal I could damn near never miss. Others in my hood were the same. All the rims may be ten feet high but there is something about playing at home that made a huge difference.

It's the snowball effect at away games. One thing goes wrong, crowd starts building pressure, volume goes up, leads to more mistakes and throws you off your game.

First off, basketball is different than most sports. Studies point to refs calling the game WAY in the home teams favor.
Then you have the comfortability factor. At the top everyone is talented. It's harder to get an edge and lots of it is mental. At home, you get to go through your normal routine which is a big advantage.
Also feeding off the home crowd really helps.
I always enjoyed playing on the road, my stats agreed with that notion.

You're home.
It's the court you practice on but you're sleeping in your bed. You're relaxing at home before the game.
In the NBA I'd think road games are worse than NFL or Pro Baseball.
You're there for one game.

I read about this in a study once and it comes down to the officials/refs...the home team gets the calls because of the crowd...human nature.
I read the same article. I couldn't find it after just a quick google. I remember it saying the biggest example of this was in soccer where the refs add more or less stoppage time to help the home team. In general, they described it as you mentioned, human nature of the refs wanting to please a crowd. Not they were even doing it consciously.
