OP is also spot on that these types of people also waste a crazy amount of time trying to save a few pennies. They will burn 2 or 3 hours of their time if it means saving 10 bucks.
Its kind of like ultralight backpackers. I agree with what they are doing to a point. But there is a threshold where the juice isn't worth the squeeze. I'm not cutting my toothbrush in half

That is not what the OP said/asked.

I had a roommate in college who thought I was crazy for balking at his idea of just going the whole year with paper plates and disposable utensils.
Who’s supposed to be the cheap/frugal one in this scenario?
You waste more money over time buying plastic. Just go to Walmart, one time purchase 50-60 buck get a set of dishes and silverware. Roommate sounds fricking lazy and didn’t want to wash dishes

My Mom is that way but she won't be on welfare on her deathbed.

Cool. Now do the time difference between cleaning those dishes daily during that time frame versus just throwing them away.
Overall, all of life's choices come down to time versus money. You spend the most of both of these wherever your priorities lie.

I know a guy who gets extra condiments at fast food places and stores them at home. I’m not sure he has ever bought them at a store.

I don't know why but I do get excited when there is a good sale on steaks, chicken or hamburger.

How is your retirement and rainy day fund?
It's great actually. I'm not saying to not be wise with financial planning.
Some are mixing that up in this thread.

Boast or are they warning you what to expect?

it's one thing to be frugal and to not be wasteful but being a cheap screw just for being a cheap screw is a bit obnoxious, I don't hang around people like that, at least not more than about once

The person that sparked my Q makes 800-900k a year. Spent I'd say 6-8 months trying to find a nintendo switch for under market value. Also always asks for something for next to nothing or free.

The most annoying people in cheap O world are those who drive all over just to save like 10 cents a gallon on gas. Congrats on saving 2 bucks on a 20 gallon fill up I guess

I don't really care what someone does for frugality as long as it doesn't affect me.
Looking at you, friends and family who book MSY to save $$$ and then refuse to drive your own car and pay for parking. You did that to yourself. Don't put your 2.5 hour round trip on me.
It never fails they booked the flight out that requires you to leave BR at 4AM + they booked the flight home that arrives at midnight on Sunday.
I say no to these requests now.

Things that scream cheap screw to me are the people who's idea of best deal is making the seller take a loss but then want top dollar and then some when they are selling.
Also people that won't contribute to group events, or, if they do, bring the cheapest thing possible while going to town on the good stuff others brought.
I get it if you're hard up, but I know the ones who can do more but choose not to.

What if you don't have to be though? I think the same way you do, but if someone is worth $40M and they buy a $400,000 home and brag about it, there's something odd there.
Sam Walton comes to mind. I remember when I was little how everyone bragged on him and how he always lived in the same house and drove around in the same old truck.
I heard a guy say once.. if you're rich, live like your rich.

I'm bipolar when it comes to money. I'm super frugal when it comes to things I don't really care about but then I blow all of those savings on things I enjoy - like travel, sports, etc.

Frugality and Cheapness are two different traits. There is some pride to be taken in the former as it implies that you respect the value of a dollar and try to be efficient in its use. The latter is taken to mean that you are stingy and unwilling to share your good fortune with others.
I'll give you an example. My dad refuses to buy ready made Keurig cups for his machine, as it is less expensive to refill the reusable ones with your own grounds. That is frugal. However, whenever a kid comes to the door selling candy bars or cookies for scouts and athletics, he buys more than he can eat because he isn't cheap.

I am cheap, but I'm not a thief.
When I mean cheap, I have no problem braving spirit over delta.

I watched a discovery ID murder story years ago that was about this super rich guy who acted like that.
He would do things like make his family go to the bathroom outside to save on water, make his wife reuse the tea bags to dye her hair, and a bunch of weird stuff like that.
His family killed him.
