Why do some states not allow alcohol sales on Election Day? This is when we need it most.

This is the whole country today
Utah I can understand with all the mormons, but South Carolina and Kentucky need to be kicked out of the SEC for this shite.

The only states that still cling to statewide Election Day sales bans of alcohol at restaurants, bars and package stores are Kentucky, Indiana and South Carolina. Utah and West Virginia still ban the sale of alcohol at package stores on Election Day. Alaska and Massachusetts also ban Election Day alcohol sales, except that local governments are authorized to provide an exemption from the ban.
"The Election Day sales ban is a ridiculous relic of the Prohibition era when saloons sometimes served as polling stations," said DISCUS Vice President David Wojnar, whose organization has aggressively supported rolling back Blue Laws in states across the country. "Repealing the 1930's ban on Election Day alcohol sales would provide adult consumers with much-needed convenience -- whether they're celebrating election returns or mourning them."
Three More States Repealed Bans in 2008
Wojnar pointed out that Delaware, Idaho and Utah all relaxed Election Day sales bans earlier this year -- the latest in a nationwide trend of states modernizing their alcohol laws. Utah, which still bans package store sales on Election Day, now allows Election Day sales at restaurants and private clubs.
"Blue Laws make absolutely no sense in a modern economy," Wojnar said. "If legislators want to boost tourism and help small businesses in the state they need to start by repealing these silly Prohibition-era restrictions."

Really? The Mormons are pretty much the reason I can never understand Utah.

Blue Laws are annoying. It was so much worse back in the day.

there are plenty of laws that restrict behavior in this country but for some reason, these things make me irrationally angry.

I remember going to WalMart back in the 90s and 75% of the store would be all roped off b/c according to the law, I could buy a banana at 10am on a Sunday but I couldn't buy a t-shirt at 10am on a Sunday.

They think their population are idiots. And they vote for it so maybe they’re right.

My mom told me that she remembers some local politicians handing out little whiskey bottles at the rural Alabama polling site she used to vote in 60s.

I had no idea this was a thing, I’d be pissed

Because conservatives and puritans love a nanny state?

Not saying I agree with the laws (I think they’re ridiculous and I don’t even drink), but there are a lot of emotional idiots out there who are on edge and might do something stupid if they got completely blitzed.
Probably a good example of a “this is why we can’t have nice things” law.

We keep things pretty stocked up, so no worries.

Blue Laws had to deal with the automobile business. Banks were not open on Sundays so auto dealers were not open on Sunday.
As for no booze on Election Day, it has to do wi law enforcement. In the early history of America most law enforcement were killed in the line of duty by drunks on Election Day. Since then, the death of law enforcement on Election Day has dropped to near ZERO.

Alabama has less strict alcohol sales laws than other states?

I didn't even know this was a thing.

And I thought Alabama was backward...

This is one problem I can assure everyone Louisiana will never have, ever.
