I know more than a few plant baws in my life and only three live in actual brick homes (those three actually have university degrees). All the others live in trailers yet drive new trucks. I know they make much more money than I do (I’m not only OT poor, I’m poor ) so what gives? Is it a credit issue or do they just really enjoy living in a home that can blow away during a summertime thunderstorm? Why are they so content with living in double-wides?

I don’t get it. If I made their kind of money I’d be so much better off than I currently am but I make less than them and live better and probably have more assets. Though they have me beat in the vehicle department since I drive a paid-off 8 year old vehicle.

Are they saving money to buy a home with cash? What’s the story here?

They’d rather spend money on a big truck and boat

They have 200 acres to hunt on in Mississippi. They will build their homes there when they retire at 45.

Trucks, truck nuts, alimony, child support, and travel ball all add up.

My grandfather was a plant baw and died a multimillionaire. Granted he started as a pipe fitter and retired superintendent of the plant

ETA - also a Battle of the Bulge vet. He'd have kicked most of your asses and mine at 65

I cant speak for the current generation but the ones that I know that are fixing to retire did not have a college degree started making good money straight out of high school, were/are very conservative with their money, worked an arse load of overtime, bought/built a modest brick house in their early 30's and have an arse load in company stock and/or 401K.

1 trailer homes are cheap and adequate housing. If you don’t need any more than that, then you can save a lot of money with a trailer home to invest in a better boat/truck/camp

2. A lot of plant baws live in areas which were disproportionately impacted by the 2016 Floods. They may have had a house before then, but decided it was cheaper to replace one on a slab with an elevated trailer.

3. Contractor plant baws tend to have to move around a lot. They’ll spend a year or two on a job at one plant, then 6 months 100 miles down the road, then a year or two in Texas, etc. it’s easier to just have a travel trailer and pull it with you to each area when you have to move for work.

4. Child support/alimony. Plant baws tend to have a lot of baby mommas and/or ex-wives. Despite making a lot of money, they’re likely on the hook for a lot as well, so a trailer may be all they can afford.
