Why do rental cars companies attach both keys together?

What is the point of this. I get they don’t want the keys separated and lost but now if you lose one you lose both. Makes it clunky as hell to carry around. Why don’t they just give you one and keep the other themselves in case of emergencies or so they always have a backup. Is there a reason I’m missing or is this something incredibly dumb that has no explanation?

Is this the the only question that has never been asked on the OT?

What's an agency going to do with a key when you drop the car off at another location?

They want to keep both sets of keys together because they sell the cars after a year or two

they figure that an average person can separate the keys when they get them

Why waste the time?
It’s a rental.

They do it in case you exchange/check in at another location.

How? They are attached with wire.

I worked at Enterprise at one point in my life. Cost of replacing one would be far too much and they don’t want the responsibility of keeping a spare set at the branch.

It’s likely cheaper to have the rare lost key re-done by a dealer then holding onto them separately, plus its most likely a customer loses them and then the customer just pays for it.

Because chances are you're not returning it to the same location. Why should they hold on to a set of keys to a car they'll never see again?

I often return a rental car to a different location. That’s a ton of keys if you don’t keep them together.

Almost like they could have a home office or warehouse that specializes in storing via something like the VIN and when the car gets sold they just spend the $2.50 sending the key that way.

Enterprise started doing some sort of cable bullshite. Can only imagine the $49 charge for them to recable it.
