re: Why do people treat former drug addicts/felons like they are heroes?

Because it’s extremely difficult. People admire those that accomplish difficult tasks, especially when it’s something positive.

If we could get people to stop drinking and eat weed gummies, crime would go down and the. World would be a much better place.

You should check out the parable of the Prodigal Son. I’m atheist, but it’s a good story.

Ok, so now YOU are the hero. Now we see what this is really about.

Addiction is very difficult to truly beat. It’s a laudable accomplishment.

I was at a social gathering a few years ago and some guy started bragging about being "5 years sober".
All of the hens starting showering praise as if the guy just announced that he cured cancer.
I said "hey, if you think that's impressive, I'm 27 years sober" (because I was 27 at the time).
People gasped, the hens blew a gasket and told me that I was a jerk for making such a comment.
So let me see if I understand what you're saying.
For some reason a person at a party you attended shared that he had a substance abuse but was now 10 years sober. Why did he share that? Could have been because some arse was being insistent he have a drink? You don't really elaborate.
As the women begin to show some interest in him and his plight, you become jealous and make some smart arse remark that you perceive as being clever. The women present think is is a shitty remark and that hurts your feelings so you eventually come on the OT seeking affirmation.
TLDR: You were pissed because the guy got more attention than you, made a douchebag remark that you were called down for and now you have sand in your vagina.

Pro tip: Instead of acting upset about it, learn how to use people's sympathy against them. Yes, it's a bit sociopathic, but that's the world we live in.

I agree dude. If you were weak and got over it, good on you. I’m not impressed with ex junkies that get clean. I’m happy for them, but not even a little bit impressed. They made the mess that was theirs to clean up.

The sting ones are aware enough to never go down that road.

The same people that were praising this "former" drug addict were probably furious when their car was broken into, their home was burglarized, their grandparent was mugged and hospitalized.
Do they not understand that there is a 99 percent chance that the person that did those things was a drug addict?
Hey, it may have even been the "former" drug addict that you are now praising.
A proper response to his declaration of being "5 years sober" should have been "so, are you the pos that broke into my car and mugged my grandmother?".
Or "well congrats on no longer being a pos, now gfy".

Are they getting treated like heros or are people just acknowledging them for achieving something that only people who have achieved it understands what it takes?
Why would anyone ever want to encourage those who have to live with that addiction everyday of their life to continue to stay on the track they are on?
