Why do people still buy luggage as graduation gifts?

I mostly see it from older people. What makes people think and 18 year old graduating from high school wants a set of luggage as a gift?

Who gives a frick if it's what they want? It's a gift that's fairly expensive and can be useful to them down the road.

I recalled having the same thoughts when i got luggage as a graduation present
then that luggage lasted me all of college and law school
hell, i still use the dopp kit that came with it
cant say that about any of the other gifts i got

I would have thought the same as an 18 year old. Now as a 30 year old I wish someone had bought me some. I travel all the time and my luggage is shite.

I would always appreciate a nice set of luggage as a gift. Especially when it's all made to nest into itself.
Good luggage is great to have and college students spend more nights out and travel more than most other demographics.

Typically people go off to college so travel a lot back and forth home esp the first couple of years.

Because it works better than paper bags. Three of my kids have graduated from HSC and all rec'd luggage as a gift. When they left for college they had their clothes in the....LUGGAGE! When they go on weekend trips, they use the...LUGGAGE. And when they come home they put their clothes in the...LUGGAGE. Of course, you can always use a trash bag.

Because a lot of people move away to college and could use the luggage. I know I did.

My parents gave me luggage as a HS graduation gift. Considering I didn't own any and was going on a cruise for my senior trip....I was pretty grateful for the gift. 
Granted...it was a pretty cheap luggage set...but it was what they could afford and it lasted almost 10 years before I had replaced all of it with newer pieces.

Same reasoning still exists. Are you implying its merely a cliche' move by the gifters? Don't we get fresh bags and shite to start daycare, elementary, middle, high school tenures? Why not do it for real life.
