This!

Our TV is over the fireplace. Bottom of the TV is 6’ off the ground. Fireplace is about 18’ from recliner. We have a recliner, a couch and love seat with 4 additional reclining seats. No one’s ever had an issue with it.

TV’s over fireplaces always looks tacky.

Do they do it because it looks good over the fireplace? There is no way it's comfortable watching a TV 8 to 10 feet in the air.

It's to counter the hunched over staring at phone screens the rest of the time.

But yeah, ideally, TVs wouldn't be at such a steep viewing angle. I think most people do it out of convenience since most homes weren't built with 70+" TVs in mind.

I rarely sit down to watch the TV in the living room. Usually, people are standing around the room in an open floor plan, so the higher focal point makes a lot more sense. Also unlikely to block any sight lines from others.

If you’re concerned about AV quality, you likely need a dedicated theatre room for it. Living rooms are not designed for acoustics or visual considerations (large windows, etc). A TV above the fireplace allows the room layout to center around both key focal points, without much compromise.

Not always

I don't have one mounted above my fireplace but it's not accurate to say it's always tacky.

Here's the deal- a lot of people want 2 things pretty consistently:

1) Natural light - so at least one wall is going to be dominated by windows or French doors

2) An open concept - so the odds are new builds and Reno's aren't going to have boxed in living spaces

My brother has his above the fireplace but it's a big living room, he has a good tilt on it and all the furniture faces the fireplace and the TV so Christmas is pretty awesome with the fire rolling and the ball games on, then he cuts it off and we read a book to all the kids.

I agree with Op- there's a height where it gets insane but it absolutely can be done tastefully

This. In the recliner, it's perfect mounted above the fireplace. Also, I can see my TV perfectly from my kitchen while cooking/eating with it being higher up.

Why do people worry about what other people do in their own homes?

Yep watched that thing explode on a TV just about like that in school. Maybe 4th grade or so.

In my opinion, the TV doesn't belong in the room where the main fireplace is (if there is more than one fireplace).

The fireplace room should be the living room where conversation, cocktails, and reading occurs. The TV belongs in a media room, or den, or other room.

The flat screen sits on top of the old console tv, not on the fireplace.

Very few average-sized homes are built without open-concept floorplans these days. The living room/den, kitchen, dining room, and breakfast nook are often all one large living space. Often there is only one logical place for a large TV and rarely is it near optimal for the TV.

We have an older house that still has the formal living room and separate den. You don't see that much anymore.

Since the only logical place to put my tv was over the fireplace, but I didn’t want to be a follower, I mounted ours to the ceiling instead.

Yeah, I never got that either. It's terrible looking up to watch. After a few minutes your neck is tired. I think the fad will die, if it doesn't no big deal b/c I will never do it.
