Why would you ever want to live in a rural area? I can walk to anything, including work, in less than 10 minutes. I have no commute and never have to deal with traffic.

See how dumb I sound when I speak that in absolutes?

Post a pic of what you think a subdivision is.

I live in what I would call a subdivision on the outskirts of Houston, and we live on about an acre of property. I have all the privacy I could ever want yet my “subdivision” is replete with other kids for my kids to play with whenever they want. For me, it is perfect.

To each their own. But, what can I do with acreage? I don't hunt. Even if you hunt wouldn't you need 100s of acres?

The tranquility adds 12 days a year to your life, so your point is moot

A lot of horror movies involve inbred white-trash, isolated and living off the land. I live in a non-gated (rare here) lax rules neighborhood of 44 homes. Perfect.

Has a similar conversation awhile back. Cookie cutter homes that are too close to each other. Evidently I am in the minority for thinking that’s bad.

It’s not sonething you can do often, especially once you are a homeowner.

But people often under appreciate how awesome having a less than 15 minute commute can be.

I drive because I have to take the kids to and from school before and after work but I put gas in the car about 6 times a year because my commute is about 1 mile per day. 6-10 minutes each way with traffic.

There are a wide range of subdivisions. Some have 1-2 acre lots, some have really cool commercial centers and are very walkable, some have great recreation facilities. All of these are valid reasons. Plus many older urban subdivisions like a lot of the garden district in BR don't have HOAs, but get by just fine with the City standards.

Now 50-75 ft lots with cookie-cutter houses stacked on top of each other, no sidewalks, and fascist HOAs, yes, you have a point.

There's chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.

Some folks might prefer living in a subdivision where their young kids have kids to play with. They might prefer driving an extra hour to the "country".
They also might not want to spend all those extra hours mowing grass, taking care of the back 40 and instead enjoy doing a lot less yard work.

Some might like doing no yard work and choose more of an urban setting and live that way.

The thing is folks can choose. There's no one way.

Because my back yard is a golf course and its gated to keep out folks like yourself. Also my kids have a shite ton of friends to keep them busy.

I’m in one because my wife would only consider a turn-key house in a manicured community. Since she never goes outside, it made perfect sense for her.

I’ve always hated it. It offers nothing that consider desirable.

I was raised on 38 acres. I have no desire to manage that much land again. Especially while I'm working. My weekends are precious to me. I'm perfectly fine with my 1/4 of an acre lot

I am walking distance from a EMS/firestation, and maybe 3 minutes from a couple of major medical centers with ERs. When you are my age these things start to seem important, had a friend that lived out in the sticks die while waiting for the airmed helicopter to pick him up.

I would definitely say I live in a city. I can walk to (2-4 blocks) to a grocery store, movie theater, 15+ bars and restaurants, and 5-7 hotels.
But the kids still play in the street, ride bikes around, all the houses have a driveway and a front and back yard. I still have to mow my lawn, and we have an outdoor porch and a pool. I wouldn’t to have to drive 30 minutes to go anywhere.

For a 30 minute longer commute, you spend an extra 487 days driving in your life (1.33 years). Assuming 45 year work span.

That DOES NOT include the extra driving to social things with friends, run errands, etc.

Yep. Waiting til I retire to move to the country. After having lived 5 min from work and school, I’m spoiled.

This is us. Screw dealing with BR traffic from the suburbs. I'm heading for the mountains and cooler weather when my kid is out of school though. 7 more years.

For my family, we put together a matrix that put our affordability against our school system requirements and guess what...

We live in a suburban subdivision.

If schools weren’t part of the equation, we absolutely would live in the country, or urban.

Being in between means you get the benefits of neither.

But schools are part of the equation for us right now so....
