It's not even a cheapness thing. It's a war of escalation and it's just a principle thing.
Last night, I ended out ahead. That doesn't mean I don't think it's still stupid.
"Oh, you only had two beers. We're splitting it evenly. Your part of the bill is $25 dollars."
"I don't have venmo, I'll grab your dinner at the next place." Dude proceeds to order dinner for him and his gf. I pay it, and he buys me drinks for the next two rounds.
It's just fricking silly. Too much fricking waste of time.

This is why I stopped going to radio bar. Always would get behind a group of 14 people each ordering slough gin fizzes and shite when I'm just trying to score another ghost rider
ETA: also I got too fat to wear skinny jeans but it was mainly the drinks thing

When I was a pro drinker me and a buddy went to a crowded bar. This cat walked up and ordered a few drinks and said put it on so and sos tab.... bartender makes his way to us, we ordered a couple drinks and put it on the same dudes tab. We drank for an hour or so on his tab and left.
You are the reason my pro tip involves writing my last name on my inner left palm at the bar.
If it is a new bartender or a busy night, I can just show the bartender my palm.
fricks like you don't need my name.

Yep
While everyone is drinking specialsbeers, and from the well, you have a D-Bag, who will end up leaving early, who's hitting the top shelf shite and racking that bill up.
Waiter: What would you like?
Me: Beer
Waiter: And you?
D-Bag: Do you have bottle service? eh, just get me a Johnny walker Gold.

never got the "I'll get this round, you grab the next round" thing.
You've never been 21 in a strip club with friends and $15 pitchers of beer?
You take turns.
OP, I suggest you make damn sure you get your share of the group tab, or leave early and throw a $20 or two on the table and get out. When a $300 tab drops and you've sat there the whole time you can't nit pick what you've had. You will look dickish and the server then does not want to split a bill 8 ways. And if you ask, expect to wait about 20 minutes to get your tabs back.

Stop having shitty friends.

I've never done a group tab. If someone chooses to buy a round it's on them.

And the worst part about D-Bag guy, is that he doesn't even drink scotch, whiskey, etc. But when that group tab is out there, he's drinking all the shite he would never pay for.

The main lesson in large groups is to not be around when the tab is settled. Used to meet up after work, and over the course of 2-3 hours, 15-20 folks would cycle through - throwing some cash on the table when they'd leave. Check comes and you're always short.
With my group, we usually end up with way more money than we need.

so one person leaves the group to get two beers and the next person makes the run thew next time. thus you get a beer delivered instead of having to go get it every othe time.
I also don't get upset if I end up buying friends $15 in beers over the course of a night.

I've been drinking for a long time, and I've never once had a group tab. Never even heard of it until today.
You end up splitting it at the end of the night? If so, what's the point? Why not get your own tab?

Yeah I can understand if I'm opening up a tab for me and a friend or two max
But a group tab of like 8 or more, hell no
