I hate it when people go out of their way to say "holiday" instead of "Christmas," but the phrase "happy holidays" by itself is pretty innocuous, IMO. Especially when it's a stranger uttering it. They don't know if I celebrate Christmas or whatever else.

Because it's like they're tiptoeing around the true holiday of the season. Would be any other month if it wasn't for Christmas and it's just a shame we have to pretend like 95% of people aren't celebrating Christmas.
Hanukkah is a relatively normal and not nearly as important Jewish holiday and Kwanzaa is celebrated by a very small percent of the American population.

The religious right initially fought against overuse of the phrase 'Merry Christmas' because they resented the commercialization of the holiday.

Not gonna lie, I've been telling people "Happy Holidays" for years as a way to get New Year's and Christmas all in one comment. I didn't know it was offensive until I saw people bitching on here.
