Why do people from the NYC area insist that Sandy was a real hurricane?

A low end cat 1 would have done more damage.

No reason to bash people after a disastrous storm for their nomenclature.

It's a term the media generated to describe a tropical storm that wasn't a hurricane when it made landfall in the New Jersey/New York City area.

It was a post-tropical cyclone that merged with a crazy cold front. It snowed on the north wind side of the low pressure.

But yeah, it wasn't a hurricane at landfall.

It wasn't their nomenclature. It was the fricking Weather Channel and their desire to name and exploit every atmospheric event beyond a simple rain shower.

I mean...it had a 13 foot storm surge, killed over 200 people, and did $65 billion in damage.

I think they have an argument.
