quote:Cancel culture is getting someone fired for a post they made online 10 years ago. It's also getting a 17 year old kicked out of college before he ever starts because his ex girlfriend shares a what was supposed to be a private video of him copying a meme. And it's entertainers having shows cancelled for their political views regardless of ratings.
I have heard many people lament that cancel culture is harmful because it suppresses viewpoints and promotes political correctness.
This kind of culture is not good for society. Every person has made a mistake in his/her past. Every person shouldn't have the exact same political views. Ruining someone's livelihood for these reasons simply to save face for an internet mob is cowardly.

An example of cancel culture would be if I posted I support Trump on Facebook. Then a bunch of people go after my job, look up every posts I’ve ever made in my life to find something to get me fired for, threatening my family, and making me go viral due to a simple post I made.
This is just false logic. In this instance you wouldnt be "cancelled" for supporting Trump. You would be "cancelled" for whatever racist or homophobic thing you so foolishly posted on the internet. And if you lose your job because of that it is your own fault.

My frustration with cancel culture is that some air heads think that not supporting far left fascism is objectionable. So they actively work to get you expelled or fired for perfectly benign things - like being a republican, hunting, or owning a gun.
In some cases, the angry mob is going after people for what may have been said or done YEARS ago as children.
Can you answer for everything you said as a 16 year old? Because that's what Skai Jackson is doing with her hundreds of thousands of twitter followers.

Not watching a football game =\= trying to get someone fired and ruin their life.

It's because
1) it's only non-liberal viewpoints that get you "cancelled".
2) stating facts such as "gender is assigned at birth" can get you "cancelled".
3) it's things in your private life. For example ...
I don't talk about how BLM is a false narrative at work
But, if I point that out online I can get "cancelled".
I could go on.
In short, it's biased against non liberal viewpoints, rooted in group think, and hypocritical AF

n this instance you wouldnt be "cancelled" for supporting Trump.

"cancel culture?"
FWIW, I ignore it as much as possible; it seems to have no consequence in my life.
Both sides engage it, and it's been around for a looooong time. For example, about a hundred years ago, Hollywood pretty well cancelled Fatty Arbuckle for rape charges of which he was ultimately acquitted: LINK

Is "cancel culture" not just another way to say "protest?"
Applying the progressive platitudes of today is dangerous for everyone including progressives as it suggests that you have to live up to cultural expectations that aren't currently in existence yet.

Lol, it wasn't for the kneeling, that's for sure.
Damn, you people make excuses for everything.

Not supporting =/= cancelling.

Explain how they are different. Would it not be fair to say that the public transit system in Montgomery, AL was "cancelled" by the Civil Rights Movement?
Ah. You're just stupid.
Carry on then.

No that’s called being an adult and making a choice. Cancel culture is not wanting anyone to ever again watch the NFL because they triggered your sensitive feelings.
See the difference?

I make fun of Nick Saban a lot on social media. If he comes out as Gay or something....I'm totally fricked.

I can't think of much worse, honestly.
Well it seems like a common grievance in this thread is that a fair amount of people share racist and homophobjc sentiments in their private messaging and people on this board are appalled by the degree of social consequences (I distinguish "social consequences" because no one has ever or will ever face jail time for insensitive beliefs) such people face for posting said racist or homophobic sentiments. My only response to this is dont be srupid enough to write or say racist or homophobic things and you have anything to worry about.
Posted on 7/22/20 at 12:39 pm to PhillyFan1994
Cancel culture is keyboard warriors trying to ruin people's lives, not because they are actually offended, but because it gives them a sense of power and control in their own lives, most of which are deserving of cancellation themselves.

It was a poor example, technically I would lose my job for saying that b/c I’m civil service. To an extent look at Tucker Carlson, his address got released to the public and they had protesters in his yard everyday, graffiti on his lawn, and threatening his family. They had to move, now they are trying to release his new address to the public, due to his political beliefs.
If I were to make a pro Trump or pro Biden comment, the wrong people see it and say I’m “well known” in the community. Someone can go back to my history of post made from maybe 12 years ago and find something that could be deemed racist, even if maybe not racist. That girl that was Twittering everyone’s info that made “racist” remarks and telling her followers to go after them. One girl she went after simply made a pro Trump comment, that was it

Since you used this example let's go with it. And don't even limit it to Trump - there are plenty of people who said they would not watch or support the NFL once players started kneeling. That is boycotting. You aren't giving your money to that institution anymore.
"Cancel culture" is actively trying to get someone fired (and blacklisted) via social media mob mentality

Non-Progressive.
Nothing liberal about people who claim to be liberal today. They are totalitarians.

So if someone had a transcript of everything you’ve ever said, and someone found something offensive you did years ago, it would be alright to use that information to have you fired or kicked out of college?
