BJJ was developed to use leverage instead of strength

Boxing and wrestling are useful but at the same time they have weight classes for a reason.

Because if you get into a fight you can literally kill the person with your bare hands if you need to, but you won’t need to.

Probably one of the most important aspects of any training is just don't tell everyone that you come across that you're "BJJ expert"

I haven't met anyone that is proficient in jiu-jitsu that tells you how good they are. They may talk about the sport, but not their skill level. They let the mats speak for them.

If you aren't doing BJJ, do judo.

Agreed if the instructor is teaching real judo and not just instructing Olympic style rules. I.e the instructor is teaching double legs, leg locks, and all the dark arts that judo really is when taught right.

I was unaware BJJ fighters didn't adhere to weight classes.

Looking at any of this in the framework or mindset that you're going to be a professional fighter is a mistake. 99% of the people who train in martial arts will never be a professional. Most people will never even participate in a legitimate match. In a real world, self defense type situation, restricting yourself to any sort of rules can be detrimental. That said, you should train in they way you intend to have to fight. If you have the time and drive to train in a way to become truly proficient at BJJ, then do it. If you don't have the time or the drive, but still want to be able to defend yourself in a real world situation that you may find yourself in, there are better, more efficient disciplines that will serve your ultimate goal.

In day-to-day life the goal of training for self defense is to be able to come out of any potential conflict alive and uninjured.

But also every fight, unless you’re fighting a trained boxer or fighter, or you get knocked the frick out quick, winds up into a grappling match.

Only works if you fight one on one. In the hood they always play by this fair rule.

For 1 on 1, it probably is.

Because it is means tested the second you walk in the door. You are forced to learn it or get your arse kicked.

Fighting more than one? You better know some other forms of fighting or you are in for a long day.

See when the poster asked about self defense my mind immediately went to a bar fight or a something like that. Never being ganged up on by a literal gang.

The best method for self defense is training in multiple disciplines. That's why the best fighters in the world are MIXED martial artists. You need stand up and ground fighting.

And being able to use leverage when taken to the ground would be pretty useful for say a woman being attacked by a man.

More useful than trying to execute a lap drop or throw a Jab that isn’t going to knock out your attacker before he tackles you.

He doesn't live in LA. You may be thinking of his brother, depending on which one of the items I listed sounds familiar. Can't remember exactly where in LA he lives, though.
