Because Soy boys and soccer moms will pay it. Ford wanted 76.00 to change mine when I was getting a free oil change. I looked up the filter on Oriley's, It was 14.00 I laughed.

B/c people are ignorant of how easy it is to change an air filter.

Firestone wanted to change mine for like 50 dollars last time I was in for an oil change.

The labor rate on things like this used to be equal to the materials cost. That is increasing. I tried to get a door handle replaced. Said it would cost $35 for part and $70 for labor. I ordered on Amazon for $13 and installed in literally 15 minutes.

The same reason they charge whatever they charge for windshield wipers when you can just go to autozone and get them for half the price.

One time I had to bring my van in and they charged me for windshield wipers and then told me "we replaced your windshield wipers because they will be getting bad soon and we don't want you to get caught when it is raining hard and they start going bad" (im paraphrasing of course)..

I asked them why didn't they ask me if I wanted them replaced and to remove them because when I do not new ones I will go to autozone. They tried to tell me it was i my best interest to keep them on and since they are already on they couldn't take them off. I told them I would not agree to pay for them, I would only pay for what I came in to get done and that I will call someone to come pick me up and leave the van there before I pay for the windshield wipers. They ended up leaving them on and not charging me for it, but some places will try to milk you if you are not careful.

Why? Because:

Because the soy boys on this board can’t do it for themselves.

That's pretty slick. I bet 90% of people would just agree to pay for the wipers in that scenario.

If a mechanic ever did unauthorized work on my vehicle, I'd be beyond pissed.

Jiffy Lube tried that one on me. There's an Autozone RIGHT next door. I said no thanks, walked over to Autozone while they were changing the oil, bought some wipers, then popped them on the truck after they pulled it out of the bay.

Wipers and air filters are probably the two easiest things to replace yourself.

I used to change my own oil but I've decided the cost to do it myself doesn't outweigh the hassle.

Thank God you clarified because at first I thought you were meaning a figurative 15 minutes.

The quick lube place i go get my oil changed at just charges $20 for the filter and change. Pretty much you just pay for the filter.

OEM filters are $4-$7, paying $20 is stupid.

If you don't want them to do then do it yourself. It really is that simple.

Yes you can do it cheaper but you aren't a business trying to make money.
