Why do all attorneys promote their "free consultations"?

How is this a selling point? So they don't charge a fee for you to come in and ask how much you'll be charged for handling your case. And if they all offer free consultations, why promote it? That's like McDonalds trying to set themselves apart from Burger King by saying they offer fries with their value meals.

It's very effective. Once you're there, they'll reel you in and you'll end up paying more than the free consult was worth anyway.

Not all do. Most personal injury types do, but others don't.

Not all of them have free consultations, so it actually is a selling point. When I was feeling out estate attorneys for advice on my dad's succession I only went to ones with free consultations. No way was I going to pay $250/hr just to decide if someone seemed competent.

Back in my "lawyer" days, we charged $150 minimum for a consult. We would apply it to the cx's retainer if they signed a contract, but it was usually a wash, since the hourly litigation rate was $275.

They want to determine if the other party had insurance or not.

Not means go away.

My solo friends who are competent only do free consults for injury cases. Criminal & other hourly-billed or flat-fee cases are generally $100. Nothing can waste time like a criminal defense consultation.

Plenty of other times when that $100 consult results in giving the potential client info on how to effect their goal without an attorney.

Because their clients are mostly idiots.

They get their money on the back end. They'll take 50% or more of the judgement and they only take cases they're pretty sure they're gonna win.

No lawyer worth his salt gives a free consultation on Estate planning. Congratulations on getting bottom basement lawyering.

Free consultations depends on practice area and size of the firm. Not every firm/attorney offers free consultations so it is definitely a selling point

Um, cause the consultation is free?

"Hey , I was hit by a broke Mexican"
"Oooo, looks like you don't have a case"

"Hey, I was hit by a Cadillac SUV coming out of Country Club of Louisiana"
"Oh wow! You have a great case! When can we begin"

I'm not a lawyer but that doesn't seem accurate

Anyways who is a good lawyer that I can have on speed dial if I ever get accused of malpractice?
