I see you've never been married or had an SO.

It's to hide the fact we were drinking so much. The idea is to someday clean them out in secret.

I knew a guy recently that did this

I've had my struggles with alcohol so I'll never judge anyone. Thankfully I never got to the hiding bottles stage.

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

My favorite quote I’ve ever seen on a t shirt from the Mangy Moose-JH, Wyoming

It's common. I moved once and found my shed full of bottles. Knew I'd put a few there but no idea it wasn't that many. Closet and sock drawer too

frick hiding the empties.

I’d hide the full ones.

It just means more.

Because they remind them of what they want but don't have?...

Because they subconsciously want to be discovered.

That's weird. Nobody to hide it from, just hiding the empty bottles.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Not odd at all actually. It's usually due to shame or hiding it from loved ones. My ex fiance was a severe alcoholic, I found at least 50 bottles, hidden in random places, after she left for rehab. Our bathroom curtains had a knot in them, found a half empty bottle in each. They are often so fricked up they forget where they hid them. It was a nightmare.

We don’t know. Likely a heart attack. He was in really bad shape, been divorced two times, struggled badly with alcoholism, just messed up. Everyone knew it was just a matter of time. Incredibly smart however. Too smart for his own good if that makes sense.

You don't want anyone to know how much you are drinking, not family or the garbage man. I believe it's shame/embarrassment that drives you to that point.

I've had times in my life that'd I'd have to hit different liquor stores up on the way home because I didn't want one place to realize how much alcohol I was buying/drinking.

It really is a nightmare of a life.

I'd think to get it out of their sight.

Out of sight, out of mind.Yet,instead of permanently disposing of the empties;there are some that "hide" them.Under the bed,etc..

When an alcoholic has reached that point,it's truly sad.

It would go like this buying

Day one - a handle
Day two - a handle
Day three - had enough for the night
Day four - a handle
Day five - a handle
Day six - a handle because it's Saturday and I could start early.

Day seven - try to recover so I could start over Monday when I got off work.

It was a miserable life.

Barely

Doing 2/3's of a handle a night for 10+ years. I'm not sure how I'm still alive.

ETA:

Plus I'd hydrate like a mofo all day, 10-12 bottles of water to flush out my system.
