Because I didn't have time to dispose of it properly when I heard the wife pull in the garage...and forgot about it. So I wasn't hiding shite.

My bother in law died las week and he was a pretty bad alcoholic. Cleaning out his house we found hidden empty whiskey bottle after empty whiskey bottle.

I've gone to rehab multiple times and found more than 20 empty bottles before I left.

I think it also has a lot to do with them not wanting people knowing how much they drank, not necessarily that they drank at all.
