Why did the French Revolution devolve into such bloodshed & not the American Revolution?

They were at basically the same time, both threw off the yoke of tyranny, and both set up Republics of sorts (although the American Republic is a republic in true nature while the French Republic was more akin to mob rule). So, the question stands, what went so wrong in France for it to break down into things like the Reign of Terror and the guillotine while the American Revolution was much more civilized?

Could it be as simple as the government that the Colonists threw out was across an ocean while the French were fighting in their own country?

The English had to go a long way to try to crush opposition. The French were all in the same place.

And the American revolution was fairly bloody.

The scots Irish. The English.

Having a whole new continent and not an established aristocracy and monarchy present and wealthy.

Myriad reasons.

Not really. The French Revolution was led by power hungry men whereas America was started by more virtuous people. The security council executed everyone that challenged them in France.

The British were fighting another war at the same time right? Was it with the French or Spanish?

There’s that and you know.. the distance the Brits had to travel to send troops.

The French Revolution was a civil war

Because the French Revolution was more of a civil war. Not quite the same but think how bloody our civil war was.

Was it?

It has a lot to do with population density. Mob rule can get UGLY quick, especially with a large mob and fanatical Leaders.

The French revolted in France. The Colonies were 3,500 miles from Great Britain.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to make the point that the American Revolution wasn't bloody in its own right. But to say it was as chaotic with the kangaroo courts and mass bloodshed on the same rate as the French Revolution would be disingenuous.

History is written by the victors. The "French Revolution" was a proto-Commie civil war and overthrow

As others have stated, American Independence wasn't really a revolution (read: war), but a secessionist movement. It did not replace the local rulers; it just made the local arisocrats only accountable to themselves and not to a foreign Crown and Parliament.

Because the American was a revolution of the educated elite.

The French was a revolution against the educated elite.

They literally killed all the smart people.

Oh, I know. I'm doing a paper on Marxist theory of criticism and historical criticism on Tale of Two Cities that's what kind of led me to make the thread. Marx drew a lot of his leanings from the French Revolution with the class warfare.

It was the established and wealthy aristocracy that revolted.

I'm pretty sure it was against the French, that's why the French helped us if I'm not mistaken.

You've gotta think though, the Brits losing America has got to be possibly their biggest mistake ever, right?

According to the Royal Historical society, it was not giving Washington a generalship.

In France? They may have had some wealthier backers but in the reign of terror nearly all the aristocrats who didn’t escape were killed
