Why close the Appalachian Trail? Where would you be safer?

I had not read whether they had done so or not and looked it up. I can understand closing the shelters and hostels but why force healthy people on the trail who do not do a lot of mixing off the trail? The people who are thrown off the trail end up at greater risk.

I know some of the state parks here were initially closed to allow them to lodge healthcare workers who didn’t want to expose their families. And then I imagine depending on the area of the trail, many necessary amenities were likely also closed.
I know part of them closing some of our larger parks here had to do with not over extending emergency services because dumbasses get lost all of the fricking time. Especially down at Red River Gorge. I imagine the AT is no different.

My June Grand Canyon trip had to be cancelled. I would be out there right now!

The trail community went full retard this year. Each trail having to out do each other on the virtue signalling scale.
It started with letters from the ATC, CDTC, PCTA, etc. Then carried over to social media shaming (similar to the Brees situation, albeit a 1,000x smaller scale). Then all of the companies and industry leaders jumped on board.
Basically if you had the gall to go walk in the woods with a backpack and tent then you were a selfish prick who was going to literally kill everyone in the rural communities you passed through.
Hundreds of AT hikers were shamed off of the trail. Thousands never got to start the AT and PCT, something they had saved and prepped for for months if not years.
There were a dozen or so AT hikers who said frick you and kept walking. Good for them.

AT thru hikers stop at towns and hostels every 3 or 4 days to get good rest and resupply on food. Bad weather can make those stops even more frequent.
The main concern I heard was that the hikers would spread the virus to the towns along the trail and overwhelm medical services at these mostly small towns. If hikers got sick on the trail, that would be even worse. Also, food was expected to be in short supply, especially the food that hikers would buy. Large parts of the trail were closed entirely (Great Smoky Mtns Park, NJ, etc) and police were supposedly watching for hikers at trailheads. Hostels, hotels, and restaurants were closing and no one was sure what kind of reception they’d get when they hiked into an isolated trail town.
Many of the hikers now are documenting their hikes on social media so they wanted to show the proper amount of concern to maintain their audiences. The most influential hikers were all-in on shutting down hikes and pressured/bullied other hikers. The only hiker I’ve seen who remained on the trail had family who lived along the trail and they could resupply him or take him home for a night in a real bed. I think he even made a video about getting off the trail to throw people off.
Many hikers have gotten back on trail. Hostels and trail towns are eager for the business. If you want to see the most vocal critic of the shutdown, look on YouTube for a hiker called Quicksilver. The most disappointing thing for me is that thru hikers refer to the real world as “The Matrix” and you are living outside the matrix when you are on the trail. It turns out you’re always in the matrix.

I didn’t stop hiking in the GSMNP or along the AT in NGA and WNC. As far as I know I didn’t kill anyone, and I didn’t see any police at trailheads.
I think this was again a vocal minority on social media making something seem larger than it was in reality.
If anything, I saw more trail magic than ever before.
