Not sure of the exact plans for a library or libraries, but I know Middleton is not included at all in LSU's master plan.

Interesting. Isn't LSU beginning or just begun some massive fundraising campaign, like 500 million or something? And the library isn't part of it? that's pathetic.

It's not really interesting at all because it's not true.

Just tell F. King he can use the open space to rent to people for corporate tail gates. He will have that library gone before the first game. Then he can use the corporate tailgate funds to build something with his name on it. Easy Peasy.

Just another brick in the wall of "Why King Has To Go". It's too bad William Jenkins isn't immortal.

I don't know, when you click on the Libraries section of the Fierce for the Future campaign website, there's a whole lot about grants and programs and nothing at all about a new library.

Yep. I don’t know why people are acting as if the two are mutually exclusive. Bama has kicked arse academically in the past 10-15 years.

When they finally demo Middleton, I really hope they find a new library location and leave the quad open.

That is exactly what’s going to happen. Check the future master plan on LSU’s website. I believe it shows the new library proposed location.

The logistics of shutting down the library are a small part of the hold up. They almost have to have temporary stuff set up around campus to take the place of the library until all things can be migrated over. You’re talking months of moving material

No, im talking about it not being in the master plan. Someone claimed that, that's false.

The master plan has it being removed from the quad and relocated. Who knows if it will ever happen and get funded but it's 100% in there.

Because you no longer need a brick and mortar library unfortunately. Everything you need is available digitally.

Ha. I came here to say that the Chemistry Library was the place to be, but I just found out they closed it down in '05!

UL-Monroe can't win many football games, but they have a nice library:

Not true. The master plan calls for its demolition, and for a new one to be constructed on the new "South Quad" (which will require relocation of the physical plant facilities between South Stadium Drive and the Nicholson extension.

Maybe the wording of my post is poor, but your response confirms what I said. The plan is to get rid of Middleton.

This 100%. And I say this as someone with a BA from LSU. It’s done nothing for me except it checks off a box

I would think it very possible to build the new one and have it all ready to go with all the digital content right away, which makes up a LARGE portion of what a modern library houses anyway. And that will almost all be new just to keep up with digital advances.

Then over breaks move the hard content, a section at a time while both libraries are open. A competent company (yeah, competent is the key word) should be able to do that fairly quickly... regardless it's bid out to be done over a certain period of time whether it's winter break or intersession or whatever.

Once that's done, demo time for Middleton.

If the funding is available for everything, that's not really a hold up. You're already talking probably 2 years of planning/design and another 2 years of bidding/construction.

Ah, yeah roger that.

Yeah, it's in the master plan.

Funding for it is not in the current $1.5B campaign, of which $1.35B is for the flagship campus. The whole project is likely to take 10-15% of that amount, would be my guess.

For a long time, the issue was where to put a new library and no one in the admin could agree. They wanted to keep it centrally located but there was nowhere to build other than the outside of campus.

You don't even have to go to the library to check out books anymore. They have so many copies of each book available to rent as an eread.

Middleton is just a shitty looking building. I would think most people go to the library to study and use the computer lab.

I'd be curious to know the average number of books they rent out per day. I don't think I ever rented a book while I was there. Maybe one...

Either way, how many people commit to play ball at a school just because they have a really nice library?

I get all the hubbub about the locker rooms, and it's all mostly bull shite. But at least a light is now being shone on the pathetic situation involving our library. Why not strike while the iron is hot?

Surely there are enough people who love LSU that paying for a new state-of-the-art library would be an easy lift. I mean shite, people. This can be done.

You know what's so great about this story

The differences bewteen the two fundraising arms

TAF is housed in dilapidated offices in the basement of the PMAC.

LSU Foundation built a gorgeous new building on Nicholson and ranks amongst the worst fundraisers in the SEC

There were NO objections to the LSU Foundation office getting built instead of spending those dollars on a library

Demo Lockett Hall as planned, build a library on the same footprint. You could even place several classrooms inside as well

You can also demo the abandoned Greek Theatre and build it there
