Why can't (or don't) automakers create a truck with great gas mileage?

I feel pretty confident that an automaker could create at least a midsize pickup truck that gets 36 or more miles to the gallon, but I'm not a mechanic so perhaps I'm wrong.

If I'm wrong, explain to me why trucks can't be designed to get more gas mileage.

I believe if automakers were to create a midsize truck that offers hauling capacity while at the same time getting 36 or so miles to the gallon...it would be a hit.

Because they are big and heavy and not as aerodynamic.

engineers design them not mechanics

you are wrong but you'll have to talk to an engineer to find out why

Did those busboys at that restaurant you worked at ever get around to curb stomping you?

Because people won't buy trucks with terrible payload/towing ratings

They aren't gonna build a truck if it doesn't have some semblance of trucklike capabilities

Also, because EPA

Actually, the trucks now get fantastic fuel economy. The Ram 1500 diesel gets 29mpg highway.

We are increasing power, not fuel economy. It's difficult to increase both simultaneously.

It's possible, but our focus isn't there. It would be easy to put a 4 cylinder diesel in a full sized truck and get 40mpg, but it will be slow and have a pedestrian tow rating. Automakers don't feel that Americans will choose a slow truck with less power in the name of fuel economy.

I can't figure out if you're really that dumb, or just that good of a troll. I'm leaning towards the former.

They can but they won't because the oil industry runs not only the country but the world.

Don't let these guys fool you. It could be done easily but the illuminati won't allow it.

Ask yourself who has the most to gain and you'll find the answer.

Disagree.

Since the 80's or even the 90's, the manufacturers have done exactly that.

Increases in MPG have been small, but they're there. Power has went up quite a bit.

Transmissions, rear-end gearing, better manufacturing techniques; all have contributed.
