Why are there so few big, valuable tech companies from Europe?

EU population: 515 million
US population: 325 million
Of the 25 most valuable tech companies in world, ZERO are from Europe. Wouldn’t it be expected there would be at least a few from that continent? Given population and economic strength
The US has SEVEN times the number of billion dollar tech start ups.
Heard this on a financial podcast this morning. Found it surprising

Personal rights, personal freedoms, lower taxation. It is the reason there has NEVER been a country with our record of innovation and progress in history. Never.

Hmmm, I guess when I think European tech companies, the only ones that really come to mind are Nokia and Skype.

The only Euros that seemed to push inovation when it came to technology, in the last century, were the germans during ww2 and we all know how that ended. Maybe that war would explain why they have fallen in that area. Asia and US have lead the way since ww2.

I think we are 112 (Nokia). I haven't looked in a while.

Venture Capital investing in the EU pales in comparison to the U.S. That is a contributing factor.

I don't know but I can tell you that software developers in Europe make significantly less than here. Avg here is $92k vs $43k in France for instance.

1) Olivetti - Italian
2) T-Mobile - Germans (Deutsche Telekom)
3) Mojang - Sweden
4) Rovio - Finland
5) Ask Jeeves - has to be British

It's "Ask.com" now, and it's U.S.-based/

Also a different mindset. EU companies often value innovation over growth. Rather than maximizing margins, they spend everything above a reasonable margin on R&D - the resulting margins tend to hurt their valuation (hence fewer “big” companies).

Ive been living in Europe for a bit now, I’ll give a few reasons most of which stem from the Wars.
1) WWI & WWII killed off an incredible amount of their young people. It scarred an entire continent of people’s. Many of those who died were the biggest risk takers etc. It also made those who survived value protection (in many sorts of ways) over risk.
2) They created welfare systems that discourage risk
3) so much red tape
4) Much of the EU is still recovering from communism, and slowly building up economies. It takes a long time (so your population figures don’t tell the whole story)
5) a large amount of the population in the EU western countries are recent additions from Africa and the Middle East, and they aren’t in the tech sector by and large (skews the population statistics again)
6) much of the startup culture is created by youth, and youth in Europe has extremely high unemployment (also a huge amount of youth in Europe is African/Arab with poor education)(these numbers are hard to find because many of the countries ban asking about race in their censuses)

And progressive liberals and socialist democrats are trying to end all of that and crush our country.

After WWII, European businesses became very risk averse as their economies were in shambles. Many of the early computer breakthroughs actually came out of europe but there was no venture capital to market these ideas and so the US companies, which had become the dominant world economy after the war, grabbed these new technologies and started spending money researching, improving and implementing them. Bell Research Lab in New Jersey was one of the drivers of developing new tech back in the 1950s through the 80s and people who worked there, which is a Who's Who of prestigious researchers and scientists including 9 nobel winners, created the tech we use today.

Researchers working at Bell Labs are credited with the development of radio astronomy, the transistor, the laser, the charge-coupled device (CCD), information theory, the Unix operating system, and the programming languages C, C++, and S. Nine Nobel Prizes have been awarded for work completed at Bell Laboratories.

You can tell when the truly ignorant give themselves away.
The amount of technological innovations and scientific research that came out of Britain alone is staggering.

We own Bell Labs now.
