I'll give one school credit. Dunham has classes today. Email was sent at 2PM yesterday that classes would be held as normal because the timing made it obvious today would be fine. So it's not like this isn't doable for everyone else.

EBR Catholic closed all week to hide/quarantine a Covid spike that came up last week. They can use the hurricanes as cover and not report new cases if everyone runs through symptoms at home - then students come back on the 31st asymptomatic w/ no fever.

I was trying my hardest to get some people to not cancel work today for Marco. If you turned off the weather channel for two seconds you could see for yourself the storm was going to weaken and be a complete nothingburger for the Baton Rouge area. Being right all the time is a terrible burden.

I love all these armchair experts that could see this would be nothing today from yesterday's forecast. You make the best decision you can with the information you have at the time.

Most of the decisions were made Saturday. That’s way too soon. You had some smarter schools wait and they’re in class today. You act like what I’m suggesting isn’t doable when there are examples of schools doing it.

I’ve repeatedly called Marco a nothingburger here

The fricking diocese cancelled the whole damn week before we really knew anything. It's a joke.
it’s either week 1 or week 2 for every school out there. I think we’ll be ok

I think it stems from too many schools not canceling early enough for the 2016 flood. You had school busses trying to bring kids back home in the storm and that was a clusterfrick. Instead of fixing the problem, everyone over-corrects and cancels way too early.

With the notification systems now in place, it would have been perfectly fine to send out a message mid-day on Sunday informing the parents the situation was being monitored and parents need to prepare for either scenario. Then they could have sent out a message later in the evening with an informed decision. The real problem is that kids have already missed too much school since the spring. They need every day that they can get. I really think other schools felt they needed to cancel b/c the Catholic Diocese really jumped the gun and went overboard. When the Catholic schools cancel a whole damn week, the other schools felt they needed to at least cancel Monday & Tuesday.

Comes a time when logistically you have to make a decision one way or another and can't wait until t-1h to make a decision.

Frankly, I find it fricking amazing that we ever survived not closing things three weeks in advance.

fricking pussies run things. You know the saying "Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, weak men create hard times"?

Weak men are in charge now.

1) By us, it's usually the government offices that first announce a closure, and they close for ANYTHING (should tell you how necessary some of those positions really are)

2) Once the parish closes, a lot of pressure is placed on public schools to close

3) Some archdiocese schools use public school buses. So if publics are closed, then the Catlick schools tend to close as well.

4) They try to give 24-48 hours notice so that parents can make alternate arrangements.

I've seem where school systems decide at 5 am to close schools for the day. This happened a lot when I lived in Katy. It basically forces one parent to call in sick for the day.

An even better question - why did the dang garbage pickup cancel. Surely they could have gotten today's run in. Now if Laura ends up coming this way and they can't make their Thursday runs, they'll be a week behind.

Maybe they're counting on Laura redistributing the trash evenly among our more inland neighbors?

Yes. This is the correct answer. I know of one school in particular that is under a strict non-disclosure setup right now

Up to a low cat 3, I do nothing other than pick up loose stuff outside. We have food in the freezer year round and a generator if the power goes out.
If you stay prepared, you don't need to rush around and buy the shelves bare.
We will get some rain and it will be gusty at times this week in the BR area. Other than that, go about your daily business.

Within still relatively recent memory we had one of the worst natural disasters in the country's history, and a lot of the fallout was from a lack of preparation. So they give more time for people to prepare, and you asaholea complain about that. If they didn't give the to prepare and something happened then the same assholes would complain about that.

It's the same thing with the coronavirus measures. People take measures to try to lesson the impact. Then people see that there is less impact and don't connect that maybe there was less impact because measures were taken. Most people are unable to think beyond their immediate personal impact.
