I haven't looked but I don't think the lynx, cougar, tiger, leopard, cheetah, jaguar and pussy cat are the same species are they? Of course they are not. The fox, coyote, etc, etc are canidae which is analogous to cats Felidae. Let's not quibble at the species level.

No they aren't. Gorillas and humans are both part of Family Hominidae.
Do you even understand how taxonomy works?

That's kinda the point of the OP, isn't it? He wants to know why there is less variety of canines in the wild.
They aren't the same genus either, and have been around about 200,000 years. Thanks wikipedia.

There is great variety in the Canidae family. Now I didn't count the individuals but man there are a lot of dog-type animals. Let's see in North America there is a wolf and fox and house dog and actually a variety of foxes and a couple of wolves. Now cats, pussy cat, cougar, lynx, jaguar and I'm sure at least another. So maybe one or two more cats. Go around the world, the're a bunch of animals in the Canidae family. So I'm going to say they are somewhat similar in diversity though I AM NO EXPERT man.
Update Felidae (cats) 41 species worldwide
Canidae (dogs) 34 species worldwide
Ok, a few more cats than dogs but in the same ballpark!!

I’m talking strictly “big” species. Dogs don’t really have any modern day family members comparable to the big cats

A Caucasian Shepard shuts this argument down. Look them up. Freaking killa Russian dogs.

So you just mean size wise? Would you really want to see a 600 lb dog?

Ok, hummm, I guess I'd assume that Natural Selection favored a smaller Canid. I'm going to assume in the natural laboratory of Africa with the large mammals there that the cats dominate as a predator. Apparently the canids couldn't compete in the same niche. Wolves as the largest canid handle large mammals pretty well but as pack animals. Lions hunt as packs but many of the large cats are solitary or nearly solitary hunters. African dogs still harass game in packs where quickness and speed may preclude large size. I don't know man but you got me thinking.

Thanks Man. I jumped the gun too quickly on this thread and was at a loss for large members of the family Canidae. I'll keep the vicious Great Pyrennees in my back pocket as well as my trusty large and in charge Golden Retreiver.

Some dude named Hayden named a dog after himself.

Three species of Smilodon. They used to take down and eat two humped camels and bison.

I'd guess weight?
Largest cat species is the tiger at 800 pounds compared to the 8 pound house cat.
Largest canid species in history would be the dire wolf at 250lbs, several domesticated dogs are well over 100lb.
Just a thought?
