You don’t have to get one if you have a US issued passport.

I’ve had it in Georgia for about 5-6 years. It’s really not a big deal. So wild.

Georgia and Alabama became Real ID-compliant in 2012, so most people in those states have one by now. SSNs have been around since 1936. Pictures on drivers licenses have been around since what, late 70s?

Privacy concerns aside, what has shocked me the most are the people who are acting like this Real ID requirement snuck up on them…like this is the first they’re hearing of it. It’s been talked about for years and years and got delayed for a long long time due to Covid. This shouldn’t really be coming as a surprise to anyone at this point.

Were some states just not issuing them?

I wasn't even sure and checked my ID that I renewed in 2017 without even recalling there being a choice of what kind to get and it's a Real ID.

IIRC there’s the Federal overall deadline, and the states then were able to set their own individual deadlines that were all to come before the Federal deadline. When I lived in DC in the late 2010s, it wasn’t optional…you had to get the Real ID. Some states didn’t offer it until later, or left it optional for awhile after making it available. When I moved back to LA in 2022 it was still optional, so I just went ahead and checked it off.

I didn't really follow it that much but assume NY must have only been issuing the REAL IDs back in 2017 when I got mine.

Wonder why some states didn't just start only issuing them years ago?

Because just more BS Americans have to do? When illegals can walk in freely and are supported by our gov? If you have a DL, then fine, convert it automatically.

Why don’t we all just get barcodes tattooed on our foreheads?

It’s the next logical step.

Comply, comply, comply.

They’ll use the terrorists as scapegoats to take away our freedoms, and so many of y’all will buy it.

The shitty thing is that I got a new license about a year and a half ago and the topic never came up. I'd have just gotten one then if I'd have thought about it.

Just carry your passport when flying

Trump just issued a new rule that if you try to get on a plane and yo don’t have a passport or real id, they will pull you out of line for your flight and put you on a flight to El Salvador for admission to the Super Max Prison.

Yes, that's the point. They incrementally chip away at our rights as not to arouse the sheople. Judging by the responses in this thread, it's working

You do realize that the documents being talked about were given to you by...gasp...the same government who is asking you to produce them. The same exact...gasp....government who asks you to produce these same exact documents just to get a job.

Of course you do not have to produce birth certificate or SS card. Tax return docs, paycheck stubs and others can be substituted.
You do realize that there was a time when you didn't have to produce any sort of document to get a job or travel freely.

The freedoms you give up today are the freedoms your grandchildren never knew existed.

I’m not aware of anyone that has any concern about it or even mentioned it.

My wife was shocked when I told her I had one that will expire soon:lol

Even more shocked when I told her the first legislation around this was passed when we were in High School. We got a fair warning here.

I’m pretty sure I got mine at the title place next to the dmv and took no more than 10 minutes and $20 extra.

Yep, I realize that. Then people thought it was a good idea to start using motorized carriages and asked for government roads. We also started purchasing mass transportation tickets in advance and needed to show proof of identity(to prove that we were indeed the one who bought passage). We also started to hold companies liable for injuries aboard mass transportation and needed ways to prove that our loved one was aboard for insurance payout.

IDs for job is to prove citizenship and nothing more. I would think most here would think this is a good thing.

Many different reasons why IDs became required. Not nearly all as nefarious as you believe.

Real ID is not giving up anything. Do you really wish to have thousands upon thousands of commercial and private users on the roads you use, who have not proved competence? Real ID is also called....wait for it....a driver's license.

I would also hazard to guess that you support free and unfettered immigration with a stance like the one you are taking....or maybe not.

Just so you know, you are still free to travel as much as you wish as long as you provide the means of travel, without using any means supplied to you by government agencies or private companies and as long as you do not trespass.

Have fun and safe travels.

I don’t have a problem with Real ID. I have a problem with OMV. Currently here for the second time and computers are down again!

I don’t know about up in arms, but I don’t have a DMV appointment time available anytime in the next 3 months within 100 miles of my house, so I’ll have to spend 6 hrs sitting at the DMV trying to get one.

Yes, you are free to do exactly what government tells you to do.

Some of you here sure do love you some Big Brother.
