re: Why are people so "look at me" about being sober for a certain amount of time?

6 months sober. I might not be able to drink, but I'm pretty sure I'm still better than you at just about everything in life.
Except height. I'm short.

An individual who is a shining beacon of morality and has never faced a real pressing issue.
An individual who took a dark path & faced substantial adversity, only to overcome it and come back into the light.
Who is more admirable?

Non-sober people get all "Look at me" every time they partake of their vice of choice.

Not at all... I've had my addiction struggles before, and know full well I will have them again
The struggle is real, sometimes they have to take it minute by minute or even second by second... it's a hell nobody should go through

i'm a huge "personal responsibility" guy
but with that comes the belief that you support people who are trying to better themselves
people make -EV life choices all the time and end up in a non-optimal situation. working to correct that situation should be applauded and supported. you can't look down at a person in that sub-optimal position from the perch of an optimal position and expect the same output. it's just irrational and does nothing except condemn people to remain below you

For an addict, getting sober is the easy party. Staying sober is the difficult part. And it should be celebrated.

I typically get annoyed by "look at me" attitudes, but if it's helping you to beat your addictions, do what you gotta fricking do.
Posted on 2/14/17 at 5:27 pm to Jtigers99
So, you look at people who are trying to better themselves and ridicule them?
It's somewhat ironic that it makes sense to you to call attention to yourself by starting a thread like this (which hasn't bettered yourself in any way). Congratulations!

Man, you've got this so screwed up.

"My name is Ace. I'm clean and sober for 49 years and an odd number of months."

Typically, this is a trait of newly sober people from what I can tell. You hardly see people with a decent length of sobriety go around bragging about how sober they are.

well yeah you don't need much reinforcement when you've got your shite together

I've found it to be quite the opposite in my experience, but to each his own. I applaud everyone else who picks themselves up off the ground and moves forward, regardless of why they were there in the first place. It was absolutely terrifying getting sober. Almost more terrifying than continuing to use.

Of course, but I think humility is something that I needed in order to get sober. It's been necessary for me to not go the "look how sober I am route" but I certainly understand the feelings behind the people that do it.

i think it ranges based on abilities and situation
the ones who have truly fricked up their lives or just don't have prospects without teh addiction need the reinforcement to give some joy and positivity in their lives
people who have more abilities or may not have totally hit rock bottom don't need that external support as much, but likely need more emotional-internal support b/c guilt becomes a much more pressing issue
