I seriously doubt the two or three minimum wage jobs being cut will show any sort of product price difference for the consumer. All it's doing is helping their bottom line by making us do the work for them. I'm all about having it as an option(I like to use it if I'm just going in for a couple things) but I don't like when it's the only option. If you're wanting me to do part of the work, show me a more direct form of savings and throw on a 1% self-checkout discount. That'll add up to a lot over time.

We're expected to return our shopping carts to the corrals as a courtesy. As a courtesy, you should have a line available to check out/bag the things for me.

What gets me is people who say self checkout takes jobs. It may take a cashier job, but they will still hire them to work another department. Our local Walmart has 10 self checkouts with 2 people working it and normally about 6-8 regular lanes open.

So many people are needed for grocery pickup that it’s basically net even

That's a solid point. But the person you're responding to is wrong in saying they'll still hire them to work another department. Walmart isn't exactly known for over-staffing departments just for the sake of giving people a job.

At the self checkout I cannot beat the service. It’s always fast and perfect and I rank myself a 5 out of 5.

Enjoy.

Plus it potentially saves the store money that is reflected in lower prices.

Why do I have to pay for obese single mom’s groceries?

Some mysteries go unanswered.

To be fair I only run into this at Winn Dixie.

Neighborhood Walmart has good ones.

I also go to this local place that has zero self checkout out but they have every register manned by what appears younger people on the spectrum. And they handle everything pretty well.

I'm fine with self service, but a lot of people, particularly older people struggle with it, and it slows everyone down.

Not to mention that if I am receiving no help and am checking out myself, prices should be lower.

That is not happening. These companies found a way to raise their margins.

Well run check out > self check out

I go out of my way to grocery shop Publix because they have plenty of checkouts open and no self checkout.

A few items, yes self checkout. $200 in groceries, nice lady knocks it out and young disabled boy bags.

It is all about the hiring.

Walmart ..self checkout all day.

Ave Hardware … staffed register

CVS…self checkout.

I have no problem with self checkout and kiosks if they are a supplement. The problem I have is that they’re using them as a replacement.

They are that way due to personal circumstance, lack adaptability, don’t like change, etc.

I prefer to walk in, grab my item(s), pay and leave with no interaction, if possible. If I have to chit, chat - that is fine too. I just want my stuff and to get going.

Sell checkout is fine but checking my receipt on the way out is not. You’ve gained a tax incentive by establishing your store (in most areas), you’ve saved money by reducing your work force, and now you want to check my work?

frick that. I blow right pass them every time. Costco/sams, sure. I’ve entered into that agreement when I became a member, but not Walmart.

I don’t mind the self checkout- I just get rather annoyed when 2 or 3 employees are just watching us scan stuff. Couldn’t they Just open a register?

Oh, man. This is a go to complaint for Boomers, right next to “I don’t pay any bills online because everything is a scam.”

It drives me insane, especially with how proud most of them are to announce their idiocy to the world as a badge of honor.

To be honest it seems like 5 years ago this was a thing. I don't remember this happening at all lately.
