why are motorcycles so loud compared to cars?

I don't understand why motorcycles have to be so loud. I mean if you like riding that's fine but why can't they muffle the noise more. Cars have mufflers and exhaust system meant to keep them quiet. Can motorcycles be made quieter?

Maybe motorcycles should be required to be painted in hunter orange so they are easier to see and made quieter. I mean no one would call a hunter a wuss for wearing hunter orange.

Cars have bigger mufflers. Mufflers that big wouldn't be prudent on a motorcycle. Plus stock bikes aren't all that loud for the most part. Most don't keep them stock though.
And loudness does actually help with rider safety.

You can make a motorcycle very quiet. But it just so happens that most bikers are losers in life who never got any attention so they get attention by annoying the shite out of people on the road

They are just loud enough to let people texting while driving know someone is around.

Goldwings and such can be whisper quiet. Even crotch rockets can be.
Folks who like loud pipes like them for the same reason car guys do. They sound cool to them.
