Didn't a lot of the "State" schools start out being called something else? Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Iowa State started out as ag specific schools with different names. LSU was obviously once the Seminary of Learning & Military Academy. I know Illinois State and Indiana State started out as teacher (normal) schools under different names.

I think many of them just took the next available name that made them appear bigger and more prestigious once they grew large enough to attract different types of students.

It's sort of like the Texas equivalent to Arizona State. A large percentage of students go there mainly to party their asses off.

Then there is Mississippi where the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State are both equally awful.

I’ve hired better people out of Mississippi State than Ole Miss. I think State is actually better.

I'm a State grad - can confirm we're better.

Plus, we have the tallest escalator in North Central Mississippi.

Montana State has surpassed University of Montana, due to leadership, scandal, and Bozeman money.

Wrong! Penn State is not Ivy League. The University of Pennsylvania(Penn) is.

Other similar situations:

Clemson>>USCe
Auburn>>Alabama (similar endowments for main campuses, but Auburn higher rated)
Purdue=Indiana (both very very good)

I think you’re misunderstanding his point. By state he means those schools literally have the word “State” in the official name of the university. None of those schools mentioned above have State in their name.

I think it’s obvious that there was no federal criteria for naming the schools in each state. States always had the ability to create their own systems and funding structures. Therefore, looking for specific reasons why SOME of the “U ofs” seem more prestigious than the “State” schools is a pointless endeavor.

Why did LSU go with State and not University of Louisiana?

Pretty sure Tulane was originally The University of Louisiana.

LSU for Louisiana is one of the few exceptions.

The highest performing flagship public university in Louisiana, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Ohio are all some variant of "____ State University".
